Welcome to the latest instalment of Machine Learning. In this edition, we continue to explore the vibrant crossroads of recent AI and Web3 developments from the past few weeks, shedding light on the cutting-edge progress and practical uses propelling the revolution onwards.
UK Government sets out AI Safety Regulations
The UK government has announced its goals for the AI Safety Summit at Bletchley Park on 1st-2nd November. Secretary of State, Michelle Donelan, and the Prime Minister’s Representatives, Jonathan Black and Matt Clifford, have initiated talks with nations and leading AI entities. This follows a recent roundtable with various civil society groups.
The summit aims to:
- Discuss risks from powerful AI systems, like biosecurity threats.
- Highlight the positive uses of safe AI, such as medical advancements and safer transport.
- Gather diverse viewpoints to guide discussions on AI safety.
- Work with global partners to ensure AI's safe and beneficial evolution.
Five key objectives for the summit include:
AI's rapid growth offers up to $7 trillion in potential growth over a decade and faster medical discoveries. But, it also presents global risks. The summit will build on existing international AI initiatives, aiming to set practical steps to mitigate risks and chart a long-term action plan.
ChatGPT integrates Canva PluginC
In a move that further solidifies its position as a leading conversational AI, ChatGPT has introduced the integration of the design platform, Canva, via a plugin. This collaboration brings together the power of language and visual design, offering users an enriched experience that goes beyond text-based interactions.
Canva, renowned for its user-friendly design platform, allows individuals to create stunning visuals, from presentations to social media posts. With its vast array of templates and design tools, Canva has revolutionised the way we approach design, making it accessible to everyone, regardless of their design expertise.
By integrating Canva into ChatGPT, users can now seamlessly transition from discussing a concept to visualising it. For digital marketers, educators, and businesses, this collaboration is particularly exciting. The introduction of this plugin is a testament to ChatGPT's commitment to evolving with user needs. As the lines between AI communication and other digital tools continue to blur, integrations like this pave the way for a more interconnected and efficient digital landscape.
Google's 'Duet' will go to meetings for you
Google Meet is set to revolutionise virtual meetings with its new AI tools.
Announced at the Cloud Next conference, these features aim to make meetings more efficient and user-friendly.
Key features include:
- Real-time note-taking: Google's Duet AI can summarise meetings and highlight action items. If you join late, a mid-meeting summary helps you catch up.
- Private chatbot assistance: During calls, users can consult a chatbot for missed details.
- Post-meeting summaries: After the meeting, summaries can be saved to Google Docs, even with video clips of crucial moments.
While Microsoft and Zoom have similar AI-driven summaries, the effectiveness of Google's tool will depend on its accuracy. The note-taking feature will be tested in Google’s Workspace Labs soon. Another innovative feature allows Duet to "attend" meetings on a user's behalf. If you can't make a meeting, you can send pre-generated talking points for discussion. However, there are concerns this might be misused, leading to fewer actual attendees.
Google Meet has evolved significantly since its rebranding from "Hangouts Meet". Dave Citron, Google’s senior director for Meet, believes the integration of AI is the next step in video conferencing's evolution. He envisions three innovation eras: the pandemic's onset, the shift to hybrid work, and the current era marked by advanced AI models.
Additional features, like dynamic layouts and a teleprompter for Google Slides during calls, are also in the pipeline. Citron's vision for Meet is to replicate the feel of in-person meetings, regardless of tech constraints. The challenge now is to demonstrate that AI can elevate the video conferencing experience.
That's all for this month's newsletter. I'll continue to keep you informed about the latest developments and insights in the ever-evolving world of AI.
Stay tuned for more updates and innovations in the AI landscape!
