2 Tools That Will Help You Change Careers In 2022

If I was one of the millions of people right now who has decided they want to make a career change, I can tell you that—as a career coach for the last 20 years— besides the need to have a well-optimized LinkedIn profile, I would be using two additional things together to stand out: TikTok and Contra.

Let me explain…

A Successful Career Change Depends On Connection

Hiring managers are not going to hire you if you don't have the exact experience they’re looking for, especially if you’re applying online and only sending a resume. The ATS will determine that you don’t have enough experience, and your resume is going to get tossed. So, in order to get hired, you need to connect with employers on an emotional level. You need to tell them a story that says, “Look, while I don't have the exact experience you're looking for, I do have the internal motivation, the desire to do this job.”

And you accomplish this through storytelling.

Now, what do I mean by that? Well, you look at the industry or type of job you want to get into and ask yourself why. Why am I passionate about this? What is driving me to make this change??

TikTok & Contra Can Help You Connect With Others Through Storytelling

After you figure out why you want to change careers and get a job in a certain industry, record a TikTok sharing that story. In your TikTok, say something like: “Hey, here's why I'm really interested in this industry. Here's why I’d really love to work for this type of company.” Don't name the company itself (I'll tell you why later). Just talk about the industry or the job and what would make you get up every day and enthusiastically go do that work.

Now, once you've created that TikTok, you're going to need a Contra profile. Contra is one of the handful of companies that have built an amazing partnership with TikTok. They let you create a free profile (here’s mine! ) where you can link to all of your social media accounts and relevant projects.

If you're a freelancer, for example, you could list past projects and other tools and resources that you might want to share with hiring managers to get them to see that you’re a good candidate for the job, despite not having the exact experience.

TikTok & Contra: A New Way To Stand Out In Your Job Search

In my opinion, Contra is a total game changer, especially for job seekers and career changers.?

Once you've created your TikTok. You can take that link and share it with hiring managers on social media. Better yet, you could email them directly and say, “I'm really interested in this type of work at your company. Here's a TikTok where I share why.”

Now, the reason I told you not to name the company in the TikTok is because you can use this TikTok for multiple companies, for any job that’s hiring for that specific skill set. It also ensures you won’t have TikToks about all the companies you’re applying to, which could backfire.

So, if you want to change careers (or just find a new job), use TikTok and Contra . These two tools will help you connect with employers through storytelling. They will help you explain why you want to make a change. They will make you stand out and get employers to fall in love with you, so they’ll say, “You know what? He or she doesn't have the exact experience, but that doesn't matter. We can see they've got the motivation that we need.”?

J.T., the advice to share the TikTok with hiring managers is spot on. What's important to understand is - just like with the resume and LinkedIn profile - you don't just build it and they will come. So I tell the execs and senior leaders I work with in job search that we're not going to just sit there. Nor are we, on the other end of the spectrum, going to blast all over the Internet hither and yon. Rather, identify the hiring managers you're interested in at the companies you'd like to work for, and target them with your message. The TikTok video idea is great, fresh, and new. However, this order of operations applies to all types of messaging. Speak directly to the people who can make or influence the decision to hire you.

Very well articulated J.T. O'Donnell. Making real authentic connections goes a long way in landing dream jobs. I also believe that one can create or design one's career as far as one is clear about the direction and path they want to follow. It's all about tuning in to the question "What makes your heart sing"? If you wake up every single day, dreading answering your phone Or replying to those work emails, you definitely aren't enjoying your work. Perhaps it's time to tune in to what really matters to you now. Yes, we all change and what matters to us also might change! So it's never too late to keep checking in with self and keep asking this question.
