2 Things Only You Can Do for More Success
You and I have received more help to get to where we are today than either of us realize.
From infancy, we’ve had support. We’ve been fed, changed, clothed, smothered with affection, and loved unconditionally.
As we began to understand sounds and words, our worlds were filled with encouragement. We were encouraged to walk and learn new words. Eventually, we were encouraged to use the toilet. Most of us have been blessed with encouragement through this day. From staying with a friend, to going to school, from learning to play sports or an instrument, to learning to drive, finding a job, getting into college, and the list goes on. We don’t have to look hard to find our lives have been filled with encouragement.
Throughout our lives we’ve been helped with advice from others. This advice has come from numerous individuals on countless topics. Some advice has been great, while some advice not so much. Through all the advice, good and bad, we’ve learned and grown from the results.
We’ve also learned from information we’ve acquired. Information brought to us through individuals such as our parents, teachers, friends, and coaches. We’ve discovered information on our own through books, television, radios, the internet, and social media.
However, with all of the help we’ve received and had access to, none of it is useful without one thing each of us must do on our own. This one thing is what separates the average individual and the few that move up to higher levels of achievement and sustained success.
This one thing is required regardless of how much help each of us receives. In fact, by doing this one thing, you can actually go farther and achieve more than someone that receives more help than you yet fails to do this one thing.
The one thing that only you can do is to take the first step. You must act. It doesn’t matter how much encouragement your parents gave you as an infant. It doesn’t matter how many family members held your hands and helped you to walk across a room. It doesn’t matter how many people you observed walking. You would not walk to this day, if you hadn’t taken the first step by yourself.
The same thing can be said about riding a bicycle. You can read books on how to ride a bicycle. You can watch others ride bicycles. You can receive encouragement from friends and family members. The fact remains, until you get on the bicycle and try to start pedaling yourself, you will never learn to ride a bicycle.
Once you enter the business world, it doesn’t matter how well you memorize the script for calling on potential new customers. It doesn’t matter how much coaching you receive from your Sales Manager. Until you pick up the phone and actually start talking to a potential customer, you will never become a good or great salesperson.
Whether you want to hit a baseball, kick a soccer ball, become good at a job, or lead an organization, all the books, information, and videos, won’t help you achieve success, until you take a step. You must take action yourself or you will never become successful. Success does not come from knowledge. Success comes from acting on knowledge.
The second thing only you can do for more success (after taking the first step – taking action) involves the reason why most people never do the first thing! It has to do with fear.
Here’s the funny thing about fear. Fear is both innate and learned. The fear we are born with is for two things and two things only. Our innate fear is designed to protect us from death and physical harm. Every other fear is learned.

If you are afraid of something that isn’t going to kill you or cause you physical harm, for example, public speaking, asking someone on a date, asking for a raise or promotion, the fear comes from your ego. Your fear is tied to what others will think about you. You’re afraid of failing, of someone rejecting you, of people laughing at you. These are the fears that are preventing you from acting on your knowledge.
The second thing only you can do for more success is to get over yourself. You must let go of your ego and be willing to try new things. You must be willing to fail at your first, second, and as many failed attempts as you need until you are successful. All winners started as beginners. Every successful person has experienced failure.
Once you are able to take the first step, to put knowledge into action, and eliminate the fear of what other people will think of your initial results, you will be on your way to greater, sustainable success.
