Two game-changer skills to change the way you lead.?

1 - Stop focusing on holding people to account

Start generating commitment for your team to take ownership of the outcomes.

The fact you’re worried about holding people accountable means you have not spent the much-needed time upfront to

  • Set clear expectations and co-create individual and team goals
  • Build trusting relationships with each individual in your team
  • Agree on clear feedback and communications channels

By the time you need to step in and hold others to account, it’s far too late. You’re now managing missed and under-performance.

Don’t let it get to that stage. It’s far more time-consuming, energy and morale-draining compared to getting all the pieces aligned at the start.

It’s common to see leaders rushing into delivery or spending too much time planning all the activities. Instead, spend time having quality conversations to ensure proper alignment on the purpose and outcomes.

2 - Upskill on how to lead transformations

A lot of leadership development programmes cover the topic of Leading Change.

It's an important topic to master.

However, a far more crucial skill I don’t see companies investing in is Leading Transformation.

Some of you might ask - what’s the difference?

To simply explain it, Change is about making something better - an improved version of the past. Transformation involves redefining how things are done - a new way of operating.

This involves an additional layer of skillset on top of change management skills. There is more unpredictability and higher risks with transformation. More unknowns to navigate, especially at the start, as well as balancing all the intersecting initiatives to achieve a systemic shift. Not just an ad-hoc collection of discrete projects tagged as transformation.

Oh, don’t forget to lead your team through the journey too.

If you’re embarking on a transformation, ensure you are upskilled to do it successfully.?
