Caregiver resentment often occurs if you're put into a caregiving situation that you find to be unfair or difficult. Do you currently feel this way? There are multiple ways to address these feelings in a healthy way instead of suppressing them. DailyCaring shares how you can do this.
1. Ask for help—and don't feel guilty!
Contrary to what many people might think, asking for help is not a sign of weakness! Rather, it's showing that you're wise enough to get the assistance you need. If all of your caregiving responsibilities are causing you to feel overwhelmed, try asking close family and friends to help you check a few of these responsibilities off of your list. If family and friends aren't a good option for you, it might be best to look into long-term care services in order to receive more support.
2. Take care of your own needs.
If your loved one suffers from an illness that often takes a lot of your own time and energy, it can feel like you're giving everything without getting anything in return. As a result, you might feel upset or angry towards them. However, harboring these feelings isn't the healthy thing to do. It's important to take care of yourself in ways that remind you that your needs matter, too. This can be done in small ways, such as eating well balanced meals, drinking enough water, and getting enough sleep. In addition to this, take a few 10 minute breaks throughout the week to recharge.
