2 Possibilities for Constructing a Life

2 Possibilities for Constructing a Life

There are two opposite possibilities for constructing a life.

We can seek truth, beauty, goodness, and unity in a spirit that balances nobility with humility, cultivates all forms of virtue, and cares for others with genuine love and in accordance with the full power of reason.

Or we can erode our souls with avarice of all kinds, an insidious greed for money, power, and fame that ironically, rather than increasing the self, diminishes it into a dull, screaming clod of selfishness and howling victim-hood, alienating the good while ignoring all virtues and verities in favor of a misguided sense of self interest and endless empowerment that is sadly self defeating and ultimately self destroying.

We see both models of human possibility played out on the public stage of our era. Only one of them is capable of enhancing the world and leaving it better off because of its realization. Only one of the possibilities is worth our time, energy, commitment, and experience. We need to choose wisely and well.

"We can seek truth, beauty, goodness, and unity in a spirit that balances nobility with humility, cultivates all forms of virtue, and cares for others with genuine love and in accordance with the full power of reason." I found this passage in your article to be so powerful. It's a great reminder to come back to from time to time. Thanks so much for this post!

Nice framework, Tom (from the extremes) for living a life.? I suppose the one we choose has a lot to do with what our mother taught was the most important goal of a life - either to be successful (whatever that means) or to be happy.? We all have a choice although a great many of us don't know that we do until its too late.? I think Charles Dickens was trying to teach us with his "Christmas Carole."? Merry Christmas!?
