The 2-page rule is a myth!

The 2-page rule is a myth!

Your CV should be as long as necessary to tell your story and sell your experience and achievements.

Ignore what Google tells you!

As a team, we see hundreds of CVs a month. We are confident that as a team of specialist recruiters, we are expert CV readers and advisors on how best to produce a document that allows you to make the right first impression.

Focus on the content on your CV to ensure your skills and experiences shine.

A CV lacking in relevant detail and with an assumption that the reader knows what you do and how you do it will hinder your job search.

Nothing frustrates us more than reviewing CVs of outstanding candidates, who have tried to summarise years of achievement and success into one or two pages.

A caveat to the above advice is, if you have less than 5 years of experience. In that case, a 2-page CV is likely to be sufficient.

Remember, your CV is a sales document selling YOU. Make sure that it does just that! Include your achievements, and experience relevant to the job you are applying to. Only include information that adds value to your application.

By summarising your CV you are doing yourself a disservice. Ultimately your CV could be overlooked.

I would always prefer to get a 3 or 4-page CV that tells me what I need to know, and points to the great experience that someone has had, than a 2-page document over-summarised.

Here are some top tips:-

  1. Don’t get hung up on how long it is, here at IronMarket Talent we like to ask for War and Peace. Then, together we work back from there.
  2. Ensure that your CV is showing the most recent role first, and tailor it to each role you apply to or have a few different versions.
  3. Ensure that the CV is not your job spec but is focussed on what YOU contributed and what YOU achieved.
  4. Where possible, try and include tangible results and achievements. Time saved, Money Saved, Process improvement, etc,.

And lastly, does your CV work visually? Is it easy to read? Use bullet points and avoid big blocks of text.

If anyone is having issues with their CV and would like the team IronMarket Talent to review it or to discuss the above, then lets talk!

This is just another lesson in why you shouldn't always listen to Google.
