2 Key Ways Universities Can Help Students to Get Jobs Quicker

2 Key Ways Universities Can Help Students to Get Jobs Quicker

Following my Thursday’s 29th March 2018 ‘post’ and ‘article’, which I titled,

  1. Avoid Writing Horrible CVs - Learn from this Sample CV!”
  2. “How to Write an Interview-winning CV- I Show You Some Sample CVs”

many people (most were students) reverted to me with private messages and questions because

I raised some questions in that post too.

Some of those who reverted to me asked ─

? “What can my university do differently to help me?”

? “What can I start doing now to prepare so I can land a good-paying job after graduating?”

? “What experience can I start to gather to build my CV before graduating?”

For me and from my experience, two key things.

1.    THE QUALITY OF EXPERIENCE DURING UNIVERSITY YEARS

The QUALITY & VOLUME of experience that the universities (through their staff delegated to cater for students’ career needs) can guide the students to get can hold the magic bait toward students getting jobs quicker when they graduate.

The experiences should be relevant to the students’ future “job roles”.

I said, future or prospective “job roles”, because the real-world job roles are significantly different from academic subjects or disciplines that the students are studying.

For example, being an industry-level C# developer could be different from being a B.Sc. holder in computer science. The former can give you a job quicker because you’ve developed that specialised and useful skill than just having a head knowledge of B.Sc. in computer science from a university.

My experience shows that most universities in Nigeria don’t equip the students enough to become ‘solid’ in C# programming! Most times, you need to retrain for this practical skill outside the university if you want to get employed quicker.

So, students should be helped early enough to determine what job role they would love to take up after graduating and then concentrate on developing the skills and attitudes that role requires.

Like in our example above, they can decide to be a C# developer even though their academic course presently is computer science. In this situation, the student can then be guided early enough to start honing her practical SKILLS in C# programming to industry job-ready levels.

2.    HELPING STUDENTS TO DEVELOP PROFESSIONAL NETWORKS

Developing good professional networks is a game-changer.

Today, if students want to be successful quicker in their post-university career and job-hunting in general, it will also depend on whether the students were able to receive proper guidance on how to start, build and develop professional relationships with people in the job role they want to go into after graduating.

This is a major factor that most students don’t think about seriously, and doing this with wisdom and strategy can land you in excellent job referrals by anyone in those professional networks you developed. Call this mentorship, you’re still correct!

Albert Einstein got Max Talmud- his first mentor. This mentor introduced Einstein at age ten to key textbooks in science, mathematics, and philosophy. It is said that Max had the tradition of taking one meal a week with the Einstein’s family for six years while guiding Albert, thus, showing closeness.

I’ve seen how a proper building of professional networks work for the people I’ve trained – I train people to know exactly how to build their network for job referrals.

Therefore, if you’re a student, you can start now to take advantage of these two areas I’ve suggested.

Q & A - A few persons have asked me to answer the following questions; will be updated if I get more Q Q. Which one should come first: Work Experience or Education? ANSWER It is always the one that will put you in the best position regarding what that job wanted most! There's not a "must" order. So, if for example, you had a 2:1 computer science and less work experience (in a data science or analyst role), put that Educational achievement 1st. If you had something lower but went on to work for a big-name company (in Nigeria) such as "ALLIED COMPUTERS" OR "COMPUTER INFORMATION SYSTEMS NIGERIA" OR "ZINOX", then put that work experience 1st. In general, bring out your WOW factor fast. Q.2 How many pages should my CV be? ANSWER There are no hard and fast rules - even in format or structure! It should be if it needs to be. However, remember that each word and each sentence should battle for its right to be there - so, if it has no significant value, then expunge it! Another rule of thumb is... Employers or recruiters hardly get past page 3, so what's the logic behind anything longer? Implications: Less is more; it takes less time to read but is far more powerful! P.S.- I'm a 2-page max advocate...
