Step II – Orientation / Induction
Effective orientation plays a vital role in the retention of employees, yet many orientation programs are just mere induction.
Some simple actions can make an Orientation program successful;
1. On the Induction Day share what is expected of them, rather than leaving them with manuals to read.
2. Share their joining information on the HRMS dashboard.
3. Ensure equipment for the new employee is in a place like the workstation, stationery etc.
4. Explain to them how to add value. Give examples of employees who have grown in the company or have added value to the processes and systems.
5. Encourage them to ask questions and give proper solutions to their queries.
6. Nominate a Buddy (him/her) who will support the employee to settle.
Step?III - Human Resource(HR) & Head of Department(HOD) – Feedback
1. During the first week HOD should give appropriate assignments to the new joiner. Jot down medium-term goals including both personal and career development goals.
2. HR to arrange short meetings to check on how the new joiner is performing along with the HOD. The span of sessions should be from the 1st month to the 6th month i.e. till the probation period is complete.
3. The interaction will help us to understand whether the new joiner is right for the said job and if the job is right for him/her. If the employee is a performer, customizing roles to suit the individual can be a winning retention strategy OR if the employee’s skills are suitable for any other role in a different department, transferring and retaining the talent can be a good option.
