Have you ever felt like you were speaking a different language, even though everyone in the room was talking in English? Miscommunication happens to all of us, whether it’s in a meeting, a personal conversation, or even asking someone to complete a simple task.
The reality is that effective communication is the key to success, both at work and in life. In today’s Success in Your Soft Skills Newsletter, I’m excited to share two powerful strategies that will radically improve your communication skills—starting today. Let’s dive in!
Have you ever walked out of a movie or a meeting and started to discuss with the person next you only discover that they recall and had a totally different experience than you?
Then there is the conversation where you know exactly what you want to say but before you know the entire conversation has gone off topic and off track and it’s not going to end good for you.
Or maybe you try to use the avoidance technique so you don’t have to have those difficult conversations and you just hope they will magically disappear.
And then there is asking for a task or project to be completed only to have it come back nowhere near what you had asked for.
One of the top friction points in business between co-workers, leaders and teams is the inability to communicate effectively or as I like to say communicate to be heard.
In this newsletter I want to give you TWO strategies that you can put into place immediately that will radically transform your ability to speak and be heard and get what you want.
Now I’m not saying there is not more to learn on the topic of communication and you can do that inside our flagship program the Human Success Blueprint.
But today I want to give you instant gratification!
Let’s get started!
#1 The Parking Lot
It doesn’t matter what type of communication we talk about, team meetings, one-to one, town hall or even personal conversations. Have a parking lot and announce it at the beginning of the communication.
The purpose of the parking lot is to place off topic items inside the parking lot to be dealt with at a later date. (I suggest within 48 hrs.)
The parking lot ensures your conversation stays on track, that you have the ability to use the parking lot to reign in Sidetrack Sally who likes to go off on wild topics or interrupt Bossy Bruce who loves to jump in just so he has a chance to put in his two cents even if they don’t make a difference to what you’re doing.
Pro Tip- If you don’t circle back and respond to the items in the parking lot you will lose your credibility and the parking lot will not work for you in the future.

#2 The Recap
Hey you can’t change the fact that we all see the world through our unique set of binoculars. And we filter what we hear through these binoculars which are made up of our beliefs.
It’s why we can leave a meeting or a movie and the person next to us will have seen, noticed and remembered different things than us.
The quickest way to get what you want, reduce rework, improve employee relationships is to use recap in every communication. Especially when asking for something to get done.
This is how I do recap…. Hey can you paint me a picture of what I need you to get done for me?
It can be a variation of that statement.
Pro Tip-Let the other person tell you what they heard because if you just repeat yourself as a recap, it doesn’t serve the purpose of clarifing what the other person heard.
Mastering communication isn’t just about talking; it’s about making sure you’re heard and understood. With these two simple strategies, you can start seeing immediate improvements in how you connect with others and get the results you want.
Remember, communication is a skill, and like any skill, it gets better with practice. I can’t wait to hear about your success stories as you apply these techniques. And if you’re ready to take your communication—and your career—to the next level, let’s work together to make it happen!
