2 Canadian Cities in The World's Top 10 Liveable Cities
The Economic Intelligence Unit's annual study on the world's most liveable cities includes two Canadian cities. Calgary rose to fifth position in 2024, tying with Geneva, while Vancouver moved down to seventh place.
Toronto, previously ranked ninth, dropped out of the top 10 for the first time in three years, now ranking 12th. Vienna and Copenhagen secured the top two positions for the third consecutive year. This year, the top 10 includes ten cities, compared to eleven in 2023 due to a tie. All the cities in the top 10 for 2024 were also listed in the top 10 for 2023.

Which Canadian cities topped the chart this time?
Calgary
With an outstanding score of 96.8, Calgary is the most liveable city in Canada, even if its infrastructure, culture, and environment received lower scores. Similar to Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver, it is a popular immigration hub because of its great school districts, cheap rentals, and reduced taxes.
Vancouver
Vancouver, which had a score of 96.6, is still among the most liveable cities in the world even if it dropped two spots in the rankings. It does well in healthcare and education but poorly in culture, environment, stability, and infrastructure.
Toronto
Toronto has historically performed well under EIU's standards (noteworthy performance in stability, healthcare, and education), but housing issues—including rising costs and limited availability—have caused the city to drop to 12th place now in 2024.
