The 1st NIES-IAP Young Scientists Symposium on Atmospheric Environment and Climate Change held on 10-11 July, 2024
National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES)
Japan's leading institution for comprehensive research in environmental sciences
National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) and Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP)/ Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) researchers have collaborated in atmospheric science, particularly in the area of air pollution. In 2021, IAP and NIES agreed to an MoU. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic from early 2020, mutual cooperation during this period had to be kept to a minimum. Since the situation of COVID-19 have been eased, this joint symposium was held from July 10 to 11 on the occasion of the resumption of mutual exchange.?
Based on the MoU, an agreement was reached on future collaborative activities related to aerosol data assimilation simulations, and Dr. Junji Cao, Director of IAP and Dr. Masahide Kimoto, President of NIES signed the Minutes. The signing ceremony was attended by Dr. Yaping Zhang, CAS Vice President, and Mr. Xuehua Zhu, Minister-Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Japan, among other guests.
On the first day of the symposium, six researchers from both institutes gave presentations on atmospheric environment, followed by discussions on collaborative research. On the second day, five researchers from both sides presented on climate change and discussed possibilities for further collaboration in this area.
