1MW No. 229: On Fixing Complexity, Decoding Panic, and Redefining Wealth

A Simple Rule for a Less Complicated Life

A simple rule: If it’s unnecessarily complicated, it’s broken.

Complexity often disguises itself as progress. We add steps, approvals, and processes, believing they’ll create better outcomes. Instead, they weigh us down. Over time, these layers quietly build, making it harder to achieve meaningful results.

The tricky part? Complexity sneaks in so subtly that we adapt to it without realizing it. Here are three signs to help you recognize when it has taken over:

  • You avoid the task because it feels overwhelming.
  • Decisions require too many steps or approvals.
  • You’re busy managing the process instead of making progress.

This week, identify one area of your life where complexity has taken root. Simplify it and watch clarity and momentum return.

Simplicity is the ultimate tool for clarity and progress. This article is an insightful reminder of how unnecessary complexity can quietly sneak into our lives and work, weighing us down without realizing it. As someone who values streamlined processes and prioritizes what truly matters—whether in health, business, or time management—I resonate deeply with this message. Identifying and simplifying just one overly complicated area can create the clarity and momentum needed to move forward with purpose.

The Carl Jung quote definitely hits right now. “That which remains in the unconscious will continue to affect us, and we will call it fate.”?—Carl Jung ? It’s a valuable exercise to pause and evaluate what we’ve let seep in and settle on us mentally. Like simplifying complexity, decluttering and letting go of thoughts (especially “shoulds”) can be very effective for progress and/or momentum. Also can just help you feel lighter, which is always welcome. Thanks for the thought-provoking post!

I can say this about two projects that I'm working on. I continuously wrestle with how to not dislike them. I'm not willing to give them up. One for money and one for too small of a target audience. It's definitely a get-out-of-your-own-way issue. I just need to figure out HOW! Love the complication quote and the Jung quote.
