ChatGPT had 1 million users in its first week. 100 million in two months. Now 1B weekly users, only 5 months in. By allowing third-parties to extend ChatGPT, we are seeing an explosion of new AI companies being formed.?
ChatGPT has proven to be outstanding at jobs that used to be “safe from AI”. The legal bar exam, medical certifications, … are all passed. ChatGPT can answer legal, medical, engineering, operational, scientific problems in seconds. Most of them are outstanding answers but a small proportion contain untruthful facts. As such AI will not replace humans directly but humans will be replaced by other humans who team up with AI. A patent lawyer who uses ChatGPT, can potentially be 10x or more times as productive as a traditional patent lawyer. If they charge half, they would make more money, cost less to customers and be faster. That is a very complex combination to compete against.
Now if this patent lawyer teams up with two other people to fully automate the process of patent handling, they can create a very disruptive business. At the moment a three person company would miss some core skills around sales, marketing, operations, IT, finance,...?
But what would happen if 3 person sales, marketing, operations, IT, finance,... companies would be built around ChatGPT? An army of small companies that subcontract each other could compete with large companies who have a more traditional approach.

COVID has enabled virtual and remote working. ChatGPT is enabling fractional or partial working. A patent lawyer can be working 10 minutes for one customer before switching to the next. Web3 enables a company’s or worker’s reputation to be tracked publicly in a secure way. Crypto can facilitate super cheap micropayments globally in seconds. All the building blocks are coming together for micro-companies to become super productive and amazing revenue generators.?
We are on the verge of the biggest revolution in how we organise companies. The traditional Human Resources approach with Chief X Officers, Directors, Managers,... is not compatible with a reality in which companies contract virtual experts on a partial basis. They are remains of a reality in which throwing more people at a problem meant larger revenues. A call centre with 1,000 call centre agents could sell or support 100 times more customers than a 10 agents team. Today an expert who teams up with ChatGPT can be more productive than 100 experts who go it alone. We are moving towards the #LessWorkersIsMore era or the GPT Company or #GPTCo era.
The transition however is likely to be gradual. Smart companies who put in place the processes to contract virtual and partial workers, can today prepare for a future whereby less employees mean more productivity. Why wait to hire an expert until you can offer them a full-time job? A 1 hour per week or per day expert, can have a big impact on the company. Why avoid hiring an expert until you need 40 hours a week and wait three to six months before this new employee joins; and even longer before they become productive? Often they leave the company within two years. This is just wasteful.??
Fractional experts are the future. Specialists who no longer want to be employed by one company but who can work for more than a thousand companies in a year. Companies will pay less and get better solutions sooner. #GPTWorkers will earn more. What is not to like?
