1994

1994

The year 1994 was a monumental year for a number of reasons.

The top things that happened included:

  • Kurt Cobain committed suicide.
  • Ayrton Senna died at the San Marino grand prix.
  • Nelson Mandela was elected president of South Africa.
  • Jeff Bezos founded Amazon.
  • OJ Simpson went on trial.
  • Wet Wet Wet was number one for months with a poor cover version of a Troggs song.
  • And a young, handsome and intelligent man went for a job steaming out LPG cylinders at a refurbishment company in Tipton. Luckily, he didn’t get the job and I did.

It is customary now to do one of those how it started, how it's going pictures..

As I look back on my 30-year journey in the LPG industry, I can't help but marvel at how much has changed since 1994. Here are some key transformations that have shaped the LPG market:

Market Expansion:

The LPG market in the UK has experienced substantial growth over the past three decades. From being primarily used in industrial applications, LPG has expanded its reach to domestic, commercial, and automotive sectors. Major developments include:

  • Café culture and alfresco pub dining came to the UK thanks to the Patio Gas heaters. We could actually drink cold beer in a cold beer garden in the middle of winter, all thanks to the humble gas cylinder.
  • The scourge of the housing estate back garden washing line – the gas BBQ made it easier and more convenient to cook a sausage and burger.
  • The LPG pizza oven.. no, me neither.
  • The rise and unfortunate demise of Autogas (Don’t ask me why... I wish I knew).

?

Climate Change and the energy transition:

In 1994, while climate change was a topic of concern, it hadn't yet gained the prominence and urgency it holds today. The world was still heavily reliant on traditional fossil fuels, and renewable energy sources were in their infancy.

Fast forward to the present, and we find ourselves in an era where environmental sustainability and decarbonisation have become paramount. Today, needing to align with the UK's commitment to reducing carbon emissions, we witness a remarkable shift towards a more diversified and sustainable energy mix.

The LPG industry has adapted and evolved and has emerged as an environmentally friendly energy source, considered to be a cleaner-burning fuel compared to coal or oil, emitting fewer greenhouse gases and particulate matter.

The industry is also embracing renewable LPG, biofuels, and investing in research and development to support a cleaner future.

?

Technological Advancements:

Back in 1994, technology played a significant role in the LPG industry, but it was nowhere near as advanced as it is today. I upgraded my Motorola mobile brick/ phone to a slightly smaller Nokia brick phone (I loved that phone but not as much as my upgrade in 1997, where I could play snake).

Apart from the phone, here are some ways in which technical advancements have had a significant impact:

1. Storage and Distribution Systems: Technological advancements have led to the development of advanced storage and distribution systems for LPG. Traditional domestic above ground storage vessels are continuing to be replaced by underground vessels.

2. Vessel and Cylinder material: I remember the old 2-piece 47kg cylinders that were double the tare weight of cylinders today. The old BS manufactured cylinders (ah, those were the days etc.) Modern cylinder manufacturers embraced manufacturing technology and materials. Light weight steels and composite cylinders anyone?

3. Telemetry and Tracking: Telemetry technology enables the remote monitoring and tracking of LPG consumption and delivery. This technology provides accurate data on usage patterns, allowing for better inventory management and forecasting. It also helps suppliers optimise delivery routes and schedules, reducing transportation costs and improving overall efficiency.

4. Safety Features: Technological advancements have led to the integration of advanced safety features in LPG systems. These features include leak detection sensors, automatic shut-off valves, and emergency response systems. These safety measures minimise the risk of accidents and ensure the safe handling, storage, and use of LPG.

5. Energy Efficiency: Advances in technology have also led to improved energy efficiency in LPG systems. Modern LPG appliances, such as boilers and heaters, are designed to be more efficient, reducing energy consumption and minimising environmental impact. Energy-efficient LPG systems help consumers save on energy costs and contribute to sustainability goals.

?

Looking Ahead:

As I reflect on my 30 years in the LPG industry, I'm filled with a sense of optimism for the future.

The challenges we face today, such as climate change and the energy transition, present opportunities for innovation, collaboration, and sustainable growth.

By leveraging technological advancements, embracing renewable energy solutions, and adhering to the highest safety standards, the LPG industry is poised to play a vital role in shaping a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.

Here's to the next 3 years..

Great article Scott. Further highlights of 1994 being Love Is All Around by Wet Wet (and I’ve forgotten the third part) being at No.1 in what we used to call the ‘hit parade’ for 15 weeks and some long forgotten football team called Manchester United ?? winning the FA Cup…. More seriously, some of the key changes I’ve seen over the period, particularly with regard to operational LPG sites (filling plants etc.) include the introduction of COMAH and formal adoption and application of Process Safety Management systems (using some or all of the elements from the US OSHA regulations, for example), compliance with ATEX/DSEAR (30th June 2003 is a date I recall very clearly!) and a more rigorous application (as they’ve matured) of the PSSR. All things that apply to other ‘hazardous substance’ industries, of course , but they’ve all had a significant - and positive- impact on LPG businesses over the last 30 years or so.
