1987 Calculator SPARKY

Today, I would like to talk about our Calculator “WN-30” introduced in1987.

SPARKY: A Calculator with Vibrant Colors and Shapes

?The SPARKY calculator is a delightfully pop design, resembling a small origami with its 73mm x 73mm square shape and 8.5mm thickness, fitting perfectly in the palm of your hand.

Fun Gimmicks and Design

?In the late 1970s, after the oil shock and during Japan's period of stable economic growth, color televisions became widespread. By the 1980s, people "worked hard and played hard," and entertainment like video games and karaoke expanded. With people in high spirits, bright, primary-colored fashion became trendy in the streets.

?This calculator, designed to "brighten and energize the user," reflects the spirit of that era.

?With three color variations to choose from, you can imagine the fun of picking one. For myself, I'd choose black for personal use, green as a gift for a friend, and white for family.

?The green version, intended as a gift for a friend, features a square split diagonally, with one triangle in vibrant green and a vivid yellow "SPARKY" logo adding a dynamic touch. The other triangle is a delicious-looking pink with stylishly arranged number keys. Sliding the pink key panel reveals the hidden LCD display and solar panel. It's like a puzzle—fun and surprising! This gift is sure to bring a smile to your friend's face.

From Functional to Emotional Value

?About 60 years ago, when large computer research was booming, Sharp's engineers aimed to create a small, portable computer. In 1964, they developed a compact desktop calculator using electronic components, naming it the "electronic desktop calculator," which later became known as the "calculator."

?The first calculator weighed 25 kg, while SPARKY weighs just 48g. To make it this light and portable, advancements in semiconductor and LCD technology were crucial, making it more compact, energy-efficient, functional, and affordable. This evolution, driven by competition among 33 manufacturers, is known as the "calculator wars."

?As product development reached its technical limits in size, function, and cost, design began to stand out, especially in consumer products for homes and individuals.

?SPARKY emerged after calculators had shrunk to card size in 17 years, focusing on fun shapes and fashionable colors, creating emotional value beyond specifications.

?True to its name, SPARKY (meaning "sparkling" and "lively") has evolved into a tool that brings joy and energy with its sparkling design.
