1984 - George Orwell (????)
Book 49/52
War is Peace. Freedom is Slavery. Ignorance is Strength.
Dystopian novels have never really been my thing. I still picked up 1984 because it is supposed to be a classic. In this book, Orwell talks about how a totalitarian regime controls mass media, surveillance and also the past, present and future; in effect they control all thoughts and there is nothing left to free will. The book comes across almost as a warning of what would happen if Big Brother grew too powerful. While I like the core premise of the book, the actual plot-line itself was quite slow, sometimes fragmented and had a lot of holes that were hard to explain away.
There are a lot of (once) fictional terms introduced in the book which have not only sealed their place in pop culture over the years but have also now become a part of the english language. A classic that has added tremendously to society’s thought and language; probably the pinnacle of political dystopia that has stood the test of time, this is worth reading for those who either enjoy the genre (not me) or the language (me).

4 年I recently read Animal Farm by George Orwell. Brilliantly written sattire on politics, society and modern history. It came out around the 2nd world war, but it is still relevant and terrifyingly similar to what we see around the world these days. 1984 is next on my list now :)
