198. The Force Awakens: Books that Can Guide us Through a Complex Tomorrow

In today's blog I would like to share the personal reading list that helps to guide in an ever changing world with increasing uncertainty and complexity, which helped me to gain clarity in complexity and hope it helps you too.

Volatility Uncertainty Complexity Ambiguity

AI & COGNITIVE

Making sense of complexity is the first step of taking any meaningful decisions, I have enrolled myself to Dr. Dave Snowden's masterclass at Sky Studio in Munich, not only to deep dive into the Cynefin Framework but also strengthening the newly published toolkits. We have discussed especially the impact of GenAI and upcoming challenges at workplace.

Personally I don't believe that there's anything that machine can't simulate, incl. human emotions, super intelligence is not far from now, considering the exponential growth in software, hardware and speed of learning, it is just the matter of time, and it is better to get prepared because we can't predict what future holds. Fighting against revolutionary technology rarely works in human history, and it is more important than ever to self-reflect and understanding what it takes to be a human, and how human society works, in order to better understand the impact of AI.

We are living through the most profound information revolution in human history. To understand it, we need to understand what has come before.

so my first book recommendation goes to:

BOOK 1 - Nexus: A Brief History of Information Networks from the Stone Age to AI (Yuval Noah Harari)

(ZOOM OUT)

Yuval Noah Harari is a historian, philosopher, and author known for his thought-provoking works that explore the intersection of history, science, and philosophy. His writing style combines storytelling with deep analysis, making complex topics accessible to a broad audience. He often addresses humanity's past, present, and future, focusing on technological, ethical, and existential challenges.

The book "Nexus" explored a brief history of information networks from the Stone Age to AI after his previous bestseller of:

Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind (Yuval Noah Harari)

Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind

Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow (Yuval Noah Harari)

Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow

this is a third book in this kind, by looking through the long lens of human history, Author considers how the flow of information has made and unmade our world, and provides an essential background to understanding the threats and promises of today’s AI revolution.

We have named our species?Homo sapiens, the wise human – but if humans are so wise, why are we doing so many self-destructive things? In particular, why are we on the verge of committing ecological and technological suicide? Humanity gains power by building large networks of cooperation, but the easiest way to build and maintain these networks is by spreading fictions, fantasies, and mass delusions. In the 21st century, AI may form the nexus for a new network of delusions that could prevent future generations from even attempting to expose its lies and fictions.

However, history is not deterministic, and neither is technology: by making informed choices, we can still prevent the worst outcomes. Because if we can’t change the future, then why waste time discussing it?

BOOK 2 - AI 2041: Ten Visions for Our Future (ZOOM IN) (Kai-Fu Lee)

Unless the epic historical view from Yuval Noah Harari, "AI 2041" is a book that explores how artificial intelligence will shape our world in the next twenty years. The book is written by Kai-Fu Lee, a leading AI expert and former president of Google China, and Chen Qiufan, a renowned science fiction writer. The book explored AI's impact on industries like education, healthcare, and entertainment, alongside challenges such as unemployment, ethical dilemmas, and inequality, he believes that rather than replacing humans, AI will augment human abilities, necessitating a focus on emotional intelligence, creativity, and adaptability, it provides a balanced view of the opportunities and challenges posed by AI, I do like the opportunities that AI brings, but so are the challenges ahead not to be underestimated.

AI 2041

BOOK 3 - Simply Complexity: A Clear Guide To Complexity Theory (Neil Johnson)

Neil Johnson is an engaging introduction to the field of complexity science. The book aims to demystify the principles behind complex systems and their emergent behaviors, making it accessible to a broad audience without requiring extensive mathematical or scientific background.

Complexity theory studies systems made up of many interacting parts that give rise to collective, emergent behavior that cannot be predicted by analyzing the individual components alone, emergence refers to patterns or behaviors arising from interactions between components in a system, feedback loops are essential for understanding system dynamics.

Chaos theory studies deterministic systems that appear random due to sensitivity to initial conditions, while complexity theory focuses on systems where unpredictable behaviors emerge from simple rules.

BOOK 4. Clear Thinking: Turning Ordinary Moments into Extraordinary Results (Shane Parrish)

The instant New York Times bestseller, we all want to see the world clearly. The trouble is, we're never taught how.

Join Shane Parrish - 'the former spy who helps Wall Street mavens think smarter' (New York Times) - for a masterclass in the art of clear thinking.

Drawing on examples ranging from the evolutionary origins of our 'emotion default' to the secret history of the Challenger disaster, Parrish offers powerful mental models to make sense of any situation. And he reveals a simple, actionable method for smarter decision-making, starting today, the principles of clear thinking are:

  1. Mindful Awareness
  2. Intentional Decision-Making
  3. Simplification
  4. Emotional Regulation
  5. Leveraging Ordinary Moments
  6. Continuous Learning

BOOK 5. Cloud FinOps: Collaborative, Real-Time Cloud Value Decision Making (J.R.Storment & Mike Fuller)

FinOps is an operational framework and cultural practice which maximizes the business value of cloud, enables timely data-driven decision making, and creates financial accountability through collaboration between engineering, finance, and business teams.

It's paradigm shift compared to classical cost management:

  1. move from just Cost reduction towards Driving Business Value
  2. move from Cost Control towards predictable Financial Management
  3. move from Narrow Focus on Cost towards Holistic View of Cloud Operations
  4. move from excel Basic Cost Tracking towards Advanced Automation and Analytics
  5. move from central tracking towards decentralized cost ownership

In this book, authors J.R. Storment and Mike Fuller outline the process of building a culture of cloud FinOps by drawing on real-world successes and failures of large-scale cloud spenders.

Engineering and finance teams, executives, and FinOps practitioners alike will learn how to build an efficient and effective FinOps machine for data-driven cloud value decision-making. Complete with a road map to get you started, this revised second edition includes new chapters that cover forecasting, sustainability, and connectivity to other frameworks.

You'll learn:

  • The DNA of a highly functional cloud FinOps culture
  • A road map to build executive support for FinOps adoption
  • How to understand and forecast your cloud spending
  • How to empower engineering and finance to work together
  • Cost allocation strategies to create accountability for cloud and container spend
  • Strategies for rate discounts from cloud commitments
  • When and how to implement automation of repetitive cost tasks
  • How to empower engineering team action on cost efficiency

BOOK 6. Industrial DevOps: Build Better Systems Faster (Dr. Suzette Johnson &. Robin Yeman)

Industrial DevOps: Build Better Systems Faster?shows readers how applying Agile and DevOps ways of working into cyber-physical systems presents the opportunity to reap huge rewards, including increased adaptability, shorter delivery schedules, reduced development cost, increased quality, and higher transparency into delivery.

This book shows you how to couple the results of Agile and DevOps implementation in development with Lean and Agile in manufacturing. Through a successful application of nine?key principles, Industrial DevOps provides the foundational success patterns for the development of cyber-physical systems in the digital age. The benefits that have been obtained across industries?can?be transferred to the cyber-physical domain and they have the potential to provide an even greater impact in the delivery of products.

BOOK 7. The Psychology of Money: Timeless Lessons on Wealth, Greed and Happiness (Morgan Housel)

The last book impacts everyone: doing well with money is not necessarily about what you know. It is about how you behave. And behaviour is hard to teach, even to really smart people.

Money – investing, personal finance, and business decisions – is typically taught as a maths-based field where data and formulas tell us exactly what to do.

But in the real world people do not make financial decisions on a spreadsheet.

They make them at the dinner table or in a meeting room, where personal history, your own unique worldview, ego, pride, marketing, and odd incentives are scrambled together.

In The Psychology of Money, award-winning author Morgan Housel shares 19 short stories exploring the strange ways people think about money and teaches you how to make better sense of one of life's most important topics.
