This year, more than ever, we’ve been asked to do more with less. It’s come at a cost, with many of us entering the holiday season feeling run down and burnt out.
At a time when our natural rhythm aligns with winter—a season for retreating, slowing down, and introspection—the festive period demands connection, travel, and high-energy output.
It’s like a snowman in a heatwave ????—a recipe for disaster. Instead of entering 2025 even further in deficit, why not give yourself the gift of grace and space?
Grace
Grace means operating from a place of unconditional love, kindness, and mercy, especially when it comes to forgiveness. We are all human and fallible; making mistakes is inevitable. Extend grace to yourself—it’s not always easy, but it’s essential.
We also tend to judge others harshly when we feel misunderstood because we know our own intentions. However, when others make mistakes, we often assume bad intent instead of giving them the benefit of the doubt. Rarely (though not never) are people deliberately trying to hurt others. When in doubt, offer grace. Do the survey: ask them about the intent behind their actions or words. You might be surprised by their response.
Space
Spaciousness—or alone time—is a basic human need. Without it, we struggle to function. The amount of space each person needs varies. For some, 20 minutes a week suffices; for others, it’s at least an hour a day. Reflect on this: how much space do you need to feel okay and operate effectively?
When we give to others from a place of depletion, it becomes self-sacrifice—a hallmark of the Pleaser. True generosity of spirit comes when we give from a place of sufficiency or abundance.
How can you create space during a busy festive period? Start by recognising that even 20 minutes of solitude—journaling, walking, reading, or reflecting—can make a significant difference. Advocate for yourself: communicate your needs and ask for support in meeting them.
Wintering
“You may think yourself lazy, or flawed. Yet your body is made of almost exactly the same elements as the stars. Your bone composition matches the coral in the seas, and you, my friend, are ruled by the moon and the sun. Whether you like it or not. So no, you are not lazy. Nature is simply pulling you to slow, like the life, flora, and fauna around you. It is not your moment to rise. It is winter; you are wintering. And you are right on time.” — Donna Ashworth
