1947 Miles - 2022 Reflection

2022, another great year for biking. I'm thinking of this making this an annual article that reflects back each year on one of my great passions: biking. Biking provides great reflection time, and one of the ways I practice mindfulness each day. As I have shared before, February is special, my son Henry has his birthday, which also happens to be the first day we rode our cargo bike together back in 2019. As this birthday came and went this year we clocked 1947 more miles on the cargo bike, not bad!

Campsite on Angel Island

One of the best highlights by far was a true multi-modal bike adventure, camping on Angel Island with my daughter Lefa. Does it get any better than taking a VTA bus, Caltrain, bike and ferry to an island with your daughter for a night during Spring Break, I think not! This will be an annual tradition. I was so proud of her on the return trip, navigating San Francisco hills with ease, because I was determined to see the Salesforce Transit Center Park ;)

Great new protrected bike lanes if SF, go girl!

Henry also started riding more on his own this past year, and navigated through four Viva Calle events in San Jose. The whole family joined in on a couple, including grandparents, aunts, and uncles. Viva Calle is truly an inclusive event for all.

There was also a bike take-over at Halloween, when a evil skeleton pirate masqueraded as a cargo bike rider at the YMCA Halloween event, they even had a couple of skeleton hitch hikers.

Trick or Treat!

And sometimes you just have to push the limits of your bike, because why not? Costco runs on a bike are possible, in warm weather this is a regular activity for me. Somehow this plant made it home alive, but sadly succumb to overwatering several months later. 2023 goals, work on my green thumb.

Professional Highlights

Central Bikeway, the Bay Area's first bicycle superhighway, near and dear to my joyful heart, is going for final approval in May 2023 to the VTA Board of Directors. Our team has been working hard to move this bold and equitable vision forward, recently applying for a $25 million grant to complete the final design work, fingers crossed!

This was so wonderfully inspiring to read about and see your kiddos following after their daddy’s green footprint. The green thumb is to be desired but that photo gave me a great chuckle. Love this and love you and the fam! ????????

Wow. Brent, really cool to see all the great bike activities you’re able to do. Very inspirational, thanks for sharing!

Brent, what a beautiful bike year you've had, both professionally and personally. I LOVE seeing and hearing about your adventures - that Angel Island Camping trip sounds beyond awesome! - and your kids are getting to experience streets and communities from a whole different perspective than they would have in a car. What an inspiration. ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? And I hope you've won SEVERAL AWARDS for that awesome halloween setup. My 6-year would have loved being there with you guys. Seems like we need to find a time to go biking/camping with our kiddos together. We'll be at the Pagan Bunny Burn on March 31-April 2. Join us? We hear it's fantastic for our kiddos' ages. Bring their bikes! Let me know if you have trouble finding tickets. I might be able to hook you up. And others who are reading this and are feeling that camping itch, DM me! https://www.paganbunnyburn.com/home
