1920 – Architect Alexander Klein's Algorithm for Housing Optimizations

 In 1920 the Architect Alexander Klein invented, single-handedly, an optimization algorithm to design housing and cities Klein optimizations were defined through a scientific approach to techniques for designing housing units and building. Klein's research embodies complex parametric information such as living areas and living scope in relation to the built area, circulation of spaces in relation to the efficiency of the room division, dissipation of the shadow projection of objects and furniture in relation to the space perception, change of the field of vision in relation to the changing of space, etc. Klein formed a method for examining the quality of housing units according to criteria in the various aspects – economic, hygienic and psychological aspects and the decentralization of spatial characteristics. All these had a clear system of fitness criteria and scores.

In the twenties of the former century, Klein led a research on the small housing unit for the German Housing Agency in Berlin The Berlin Housing Agency attempted to promote a course of change and modernization of the housing unit. Klein's greatness was in his understanding that changing the housing unit will not be bought about by the reduction of the 19th-century bourgeois apartment, but rather through tools, analysis and a different conceptual discussion. 100 years ago and since then we are downhill, no research on the subject, hardly any attempt to innovate.
