IS 1893:2023 - Draft Design Code for Earthquake Resistant Design of Structures
JIKA - SMART INSTALLATION SYSTEMS
JIKA is a modular support systems engineering organisation, working in various industrial and infrastructure projects
Bureau of Indian Standards, commonly known as BIS, has released a draft version of IS 1893:2023 code.
As a Product and Service brand, working extensively in design, supply and installation of Seismic Resistant Modular Support systems, Heavy duty false ceilings for critical buildings, we started studying the draft of the design code for Calculation of Seismic forces and its impact on Structural stability and performance.
JIKA - Modular support systems, being engaged in Industrial, Oil and Gas, and Critical Infrastructure construction projects, welcomes the new draft code by BIS with better clarity on Lifecycle calculation, Occupancy and Criticality based Importance factors, Refined Seismic Zone Map of India.
With Growing risk of Natural Calamities like floods, Droughts, Earthquakes and all the related impacts of Climate and Geological Changes, a code revision in 7 years is a really aggressive move by BIS, establishing that India Seriously means Business, and it is willing to act strongly against Sustainability and Risk management.
But, as we all are working towards a lowest possible Capex cost models, we need to bring a shift in our thought process to accept the reality that structural Seismic Design isn't just a design code, but it is nothing less than an insurance premium we pay on materials to have a stringent risk mitigation strategy in a project's Capex planning.
As an organisation, JIKA will play its own role to educate its end users and developers in the Infrastructure development segment, to adapt to the latest code(once the draft is cleared and applicable), but as organisations developing infrastructure projects, following and implementing IS 1893 is nothing less than a risk mitigation plan.

The new Code provides higher multiplying factors to Earthquake Loads , like for Zone III, Z=0.16 , with the new code in Action, will become Z=0.30(almost double). This will certainly result in higher project costs due to increased consumption of Input materials, but with changing and improving methods and materials, it will be a new and fresh challenge for all Stakeholders to work upon keeping their costs at similar current levels or lower, with detailed value engineering, usage of Upgraded materials, Adaptation to modern design and manufacturing processes and so on...
Requesting all Designers and stakeholders to please leave their comments on the blog so we can learn more from all perspectives and work better on our product design and Implementation services to make your projects better planned , and better Risk Managed.
