Most people lead quite fragile lives. Even if they don’t live paycheck to paycheck, like 80% of the world, few people heed the timeless advice of always having six months of income on hand for an emergency. Nor do most people have a second or even third income source to fall back on if they are suddenly furloughed, fired or a company like say, Enron or Blockbuster suddenly ceases to exist.
The Coronavirus had brought these problems to hundreds of millions of people all of whom probably thought they had more chance of winning the lottery than ending up where we all are now.
But with every crisis comes opportunity, and necessity is the mother of invention.
- Start by getting up two hours earlier.?It’s not as hard as you think, just go to bed earlier. It’s no different from a NY — LA flight, you soon get used to the difference.
- Spend no more than 10 minutes catching up on the news from multiple sources to stay informed.?Self-discipline and focus are your greatest allies in times of trouble.
- Spend the next 50 minutes on marketing Y-O-U. Use LinkedIn and other social networks connect with people in a meaningful way. Do not just like a post, leave an interesting comment, or better still, ask an intelligent question or make a suggestion.?Once you interact with people in a simple way it elevates your status in their minds.
- Reach out to new people in other companies. Ask them questions; How is your dealership handling cars with problems? The more people you can get back and forward with, the more you are elevating your status in their minds.?Very basic personal branding.
- Make at the very least five new connections every day?and follow the same formula. “Thanks for connecting Andrew, I was wondering are you able to reschedule most of your golf events further into the year?”
- The more people you can connect with, the more opportunities you can generate. You must set a goal for daily conversations. Pick your targets wisely, either you feel you can help them or they can help you.?Always be the giver first never the taker. Offer solutions, links, advice referrals.
- Blog several times a week showcasing your unique talents, how you handle problems, how you make sales how you dealt with difficult situations.?This is no time to be bashful, post everywhere.
- Touch base with old friends and colleagues via Skype and ask how they are doing??Re-establish a relationship.
- Spend the second-hour learning, sales, marketing, communications, Spanish, Chinese?anything that makes you more marketable in the future.
- Better still combine audio learning with a 5k walk or a bike session.?The fitter you are the better!
- Make more friends.?The more people you know and connect with on social media, through chat rooms, courses, or online gaming the more opportunity you will have.
- Turbocharge your side-hustle,?can you make money with your hobbies? Wines, stamps, coins, model trains, cooking?
- If not can you create online courses, e-books, audios, or consulting from your specific knowledge??What do you know well enough to monetize??It could be anything from car sales on e-bay to soccer coaching. You can also interview others if you don’t have this knowledge yourself. (www.lifewelllived.expert

- At night spend another hour reading, learning, researching, thinking not watching mindless shows on TV. Re-adjust your goals to the new reality. If you ever thought of doing something else with your life, now is surely the time. Binge-read instead of binge-watching tv, you?can become an expert in something in 6 weeks if you immerse yourself in the subject.?If you are already furloughed or unemployed spend all day doing these things. You’ll be shocked how quickly you can develop new talents when you have to do it!
- The fallout from the last crisis has the potential to belong and last and the war in Ukraine will have global effects.?Ditch your baggage fast.?Cancel the cable, don’t release the BMW, downsize the apartment, cut your overhead to the bone. If there is anything left to invest, invest it in your new business or index-linked funds. The market will come back eventually.
- Assume the worst and hope for the best.?Start looking for a new job now. Position yourself as a problem solver. Use out-of-the-box, creative ways to get attention. Don’t use a worthless “corporate speak” resume, “Team Player,” “Great communicator” “Detail-oriented” … Please! Instead, come up with a concise anecdotal example of your skills in action.
- Do some charity work.?Charity work always brings you into touch with good people.
- If you have to work for free to prove yourself.?I did this for 9 months when I first came to America and again for several months five years later. I would do it again if I had to! Be invaluable and you will get hired. Failing that, take a commission-only job, the experience alone may be invaluable.
The more of these ideas you can execute at once the better your chances of shock proofing your career!
