A book summary for the Global Happy Café community by Adisha Kariyawasam

Dear Global Happy Café friends, I wanted to share some knowledge from a recommended and delightful read. I would also love to hear your thoughts and opinions about the following 18 rules of Happiness first presented by Karl Moore…

Rule #1 - Stop Feeling Sorry for Yourself!

One of the worst types of feelings is feeling is self-pity. It is very destructive and can leave us feeling powerless and vulnerable. By learning to reframe things by adopting a growth mindset with a can-do attitude, we can stop being the victim, stop pitying ourselves, and start living our lives to the fullest.

Rule #2 – Be Grateful

We seldom express gratitude for the treasures the world bestows upon us since we live in such a fast-paced world. Consider everything you're grateful for now: your family, your health, your home, and everything else. It is important to set aside time each day to be appreciative - and by doing this, we will automatically feel happier.

Rule #3 – Say Yes More

We all each say "No!" way too often. Try saying "Yes!" to life's encounters more often. Don't go against the current of the river. Say "Yes!" to more emotions, circumstances, and social invites, and you'll be happier, but be careful to know your limits and not overdo things.

Rule #4 – Follow Your Bliss

We sometimes find ourselves halfway up a ladder we are reluctant to climb instead of at the bottom of one we do. What do you truly want? Be happier by doing what you’ve always wanted to do but for whatever reason postponed - follow your bliss.

Rule #5 – Learn to Let Go

Our emotions can sometimes keep us from experiencing true happiness and freedom. We should bear in mind that we are not our feelings. Ask ourselves, "Can I let this go?" to let go of unpleasant feelings. Then do it – and be more content.

Rule #6 – Do Random Acts of Kindness

Being kind is contagious! It makes you feel better and extends that happiness to others. Try performing more Random Acts of Kindness daily - smile, hold a door open, pay for a coffee – and be more joyful.

Rule #7 – Happiness Is Only Ever Now

Many of us spend our time somewhere other than here and now. Before too long, we can find ourselves obsessing about the past or deeply involved in making plans. Ultimately though, the only moment that truly exists is right now. It may be easier said than done, but now is the time to find ways to make the decision and choose to be happy.

Rule #8 – Experience, Don’t Hoard!

According to research, material purchases only increase our satisfaction, and this is only for a short time. Overall, having more experiences makes us happier. Enjoy safari vacations, study a new language, or join a dance troupe – we can be content by engaging in various activities.

Rule #9 – Appreciate Both Sides of the Coin

How many times have we tried to embrace joy while rejecting sadness? They’re the same side of the same coin; having one without the other is impossible. As sure as night follows day, sadness is necessary. We shouldn’t resist it; instead, be aware of it, embrace it and be content.

Rule #10 – Be More Social

Research shows that the happiest and most successful people have large social networks. How many friends do you have? We’re not talking about accounts on online social media platforms; we mean good, genuine friends with whom you can catch up.?Be proactive, start making more – and become happier.

Rule #11 – Love More!

The more you love, the happier you are. Try giving everyone and everything around you a little more love. Friends, family, nature, even potential enemies, but don’t expect anything in return: open your heart, give them love – and be happy.

Rule #12 – Have a Dream

Dreams are the spark plugs of the spirit. They can give each day excitement and enable us to move forward. What are your dreams? Think about it; write them down. Then do try and make them a reality– and be happy.

Rule #13 – Intention Sets Direction

It is said that the outcome we expect is usually the one we will receive. Any road will take us there if we don’t know where we’re going. So, set a great intention in everything you do – and be happy.

Rule #14 – Enjoy Simple Pleasures

Real happiness can be found in simple pleasures and rituals. This can range from a daily walk in the nearby countryside to a lovely drink or refreshment after work. Indulge in these, set up your little rituals – and be happy.

Rule #15 – Accept What Is

Many of us spend time resisting what is. We fight against our own emotions and build up anger and resentment. Instead, we should accept ‘what is right now. By all means, change it if you can, but accept it first – and be happy.

Rule #16 – Exercise and Eat Well

You are as happy as your lifestyle! For optimum happiness, go outside for fresh air, walk for 40 minutes a day, or even set a steps goal. Eat more nutritious food and take supplements in moderation. Enjoy – and be happy.

Rule #17 – Zoom Out and Don’t Sweat

After losing a loved one or surviving an illness, we frequently gain a new perspective on life. Don't wait for life to serve as a reminder. Now is the time to zoom out and rediscover your true priorities – and to be joyful.

Rule #18 – Laugh, Dance, Smile!

Take a moment to laugh at life's absurdities! Splash around and have a good time. Surround yourself with joy - great music, dance classes, and evenings spent with friends.

Have fun and be happy!
