18-months in Sri Lanka…. What I have learned…

It’s now been 18-months since I upended my comfortable corporate life in the UK, albeit in the middle of the pandemic and moved away from my loved ones, the intensity of global corporate roles and the familiar home comforts.?There are plenty of sacrifices when you intentional change your life and pursue dreams – your loved ones being a long way away, the easy comfortableness of life in general and the availabilities of some of life’s luxuries which I’ve been known to enjoy!

The past 18-months have been a massive learning experience – challenging, frustrating, exciting, eye opening, sad and wonderful.?As I reflect today – I know that it was the right call and I encourage everyone to take a risk…?As they say ‘You only live once’…

The people I have had the opportunity to meet – from my team members, new local and international friends, and a few very special/odd characters; all combine to change perspective, understanding and appreciation of life.?The journey of understanding a new culture, new religions and new perspectives about the realities of life – have all combined to make my life better.

Sri Lanka has unfortunately been in the global media lately for a few not unexpected reasons, and every day I see the real human impact on my team, their families, and the wider community.?It is heart-breaking to witness however it focuses your resolve on how you can help.?With belief in being able to make both small and large change we invest in people, create sustainable employment opportunities, provide education to change the trajectory of people’s life’s and with direct support to the most venerable with pragmatic philanthropy.

I guess this blog is simply about encouraging those who will stuck in the corporate treadmill and traditional western lifecycle illustrated perfectly by the movie Groundhog Day; to stop dreaming of creating a new life and simply pull the trigger.?There is a fulfilling world out there and writing a new, exciting chapter in your ‘personal book of life’ is really very possible!

Its awesome to see you are making a difference and you're passionate about what you do. You've always been one not to shy away from a challenge and take the bull by the horns. The things you do on a daily basis, whether aware or not, make a massive impact on others lives and experiences. I'm grateful for the experience and growth that I got working for you and impact on my life you made. Keep up the great work.
