1,700-V GaN switcher IC sets new benchmark

Power Integrations’ InnoMux-2 1,700-GaN switcher IC features greater than 90% efficiency from a 1,000 VDC bus.

Power Integrations has introduced a new member of the?InnoMux-2 family of single-stage, independently-regulated multi-output offline power supply ICs. The company claims the 1,700-V rating for the new GaN switcher IC continues to advance the state-of-the-art for GaN power devices, previously set by its 900-V and 1,250-V devices introduced in 2023.

The GaN switcher IC replaces expensive silicon carbide (SiC) transistors in power supply applications including automotive chargers, solar inverters, three-phase meters and industrial power systems, according to Power Integrations.

The?InnoMux-2?IC features the industry’s first 1700-V GaN switch, fabricated using the company’s proprietary PowiGaN technology. The InnoMux-2 supports 1,000 VDC nominal input voltage in a flyback configuration, achieving more than 90 percent efficiency in applications that require one, two or three supply voltages. Each output is regulated within one percent accuracy.

The new InnoMux-2 IC combines the 1,700-V PowiGaN switch, InnoMux-2 multi-output capability; FluxLink, the company’s secondary-side regulation (SSR) digital isolation communications technology; and zero voltage switching (ZVS) without an active-clamp. The combination virtually eliminates switching losses, the company said.

Other features include single-stage power conversion for high efficiency, as well as the elimination of post-regulators, delivering up to 10% higher efficiency, low component count, and less than 50 mW no-load consumption. Up to three independently regulated outputs provide constant voltage and current outputs, and less than ±1% combined load/line/cross regulation.

Pricing for InnoMux-2 1,700 V IC starts at $4.90 in quantities of 10,000. A reference design, RDR-1053, for a 60-W dual-output (5 V and 24 V) power supply can be downloaded at no cost. Sample ICs and evaluation boards are available through Power Integrations or an authorized worldwide distributor.
