Who is she: Born and bred in Brooklyn, Sophia Gibbins has a Brazilian/English heritage. She is about to graduate from Murrow high school, Jean-Michel Basquiat's Alma Mater. Her skills are astonishing, as were Picasso's and Frieda Kahlo's and Michelangelo's at that age.
Why her: She's a fiery young painter who addresses issues young women face such as identity, lack of rights over their bodies, and societal obsession with physical appearances.
More specifically, she speaks of suffering from Crohn's disease, which is particularly challenging to adolescents.
Starring: We firmly believe that in 10 years, we will say: we used to know Sophia Gibbins way back. Before she showed at the .... (fill the blank: Whitney? Hirshhorn? MOCA or MOMA? Centre Pompidou?)
"Reach" (detail above, full image here) is showing at the Met Museum as it garnered a Scholastic Gold Award. "Magpie" is in the Honorary Art Society show. She is being offered full scholarships at Pratt, Parson, RISD and Chicago Art School. She's a star.?
