A 17 Year Old DNS Vulnerability and Why you Need DNS Security

written by: Luke Truan

Here we go again! DNS Security! You've seen me talk about this in the not-so-distant posts on The VOCS Roundup! However, this is super important topic and can protect your home, home office and business computers and networks!

Have you seen this article below ?? on the internet? Its about a 17-year-old critical Windows DNS Server vulnerability. This does not apply for a voice over business, unless you have a DNS server in your office/home studio. However, the concept of DNS security does apply!

TL;DR

The reason that DNS security is so important is because DNS controls the path you take to get around on the internet. For example, if you have an unpatched vulnerability and you just happen to visit a website (new or existing) and malicious code in an AD (or just on the website) run on your computer, the running code can alter how your computer is using DNS. Thus, directing your computer to a malicious site behind the scenes, downloading additional malicious code, taking you to an entire different website, etc. You could even end up on a fake login page for Office 365, Wells Fargo, Citibank, Chase - You get the idea! Yikes!

Here is a quick visual example of how DNS security works.

DNS Security - How it Works

I encourage you to look into OpenDNS/Cisco Umbrella. The free version is as simple as a router change! The paid for versions get even better. I use Cisco Umbrella, because it offers a small agent to install on my laptop - so I'm protected on any network that I would use outside of my office. I also used the hotspot on my phone when I'm outside the office, but that is a different security article! ??
