With Law 25 around the corner, even if you are not in the IT department of your company, it is helpful to understand some common cybersecurity terms.
Knowing them will give you a shared language in speaking with the IT team or your IT provider. Not only will I define these important terms, but I will share advice for increasing the cybersecurity of your company. Note that an IT team does not automatically provide cybersecurity. Verify that your IT provider, whose main purpose is to manage and maintain the technology infrastructure, is also putting cybersecurity systems into place. If you clearly understand the ROLE that your IT Team plays now, you’ll know what to do next to go a step above!?
What role does your IT team play in your company’s business development?
Is it an integral partner or is it rather an expense? I completely agree with Deloitte when they assert that there are four possible roles that an IT team can play within a company: cost center, IT provider, strategic partner and strategic driver. And the role is determined uniquely by how senior management views the IT team. If it is seen as an integral partner, senior management will empower the IT team to make strategic improvements. If, however, the IT team is seen as a necessary evil, the team will remain passive, only carrying out directives. To unlock your company’s full potential, the IT team must become a strategic partner and perhaps even a strategic driver.

And, for both management and IT, did you ever feel that you just couldn’t get your points across? That you were speaking two different languages? In many businesses, there is a real and inefficient language barrier between management and the IT team. The language of management is that of revenue streams, marketing strategies, and KPIs, whereas the language of the IT team is that of real-world implementation with its limitations and challenges. Let’s explore some advantages to breaking down this language barrier, before looking at ways of doing so.
