The 17 Sustainability Development Goals of the United Nations for a Better Tomorrow ??

Out of discussion with a group of younger people this week related to sustainability I found out that they had no idea about the 17 SDG goals of the UN for a better tomorrow. I truly believe that everyone should know them and should keep them in mind.

Let me quickly summarize the goals and some details related to each of them in the hope that I help to spread the goals across all generations - from young to older generations:

In 2015, the United Nations introduced the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a comprehensive blueprint designed to address the most pressing global challenges by 2030. These 17 goals serve as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure peace and prosperity for all.

1?? No Poverty ??????

The first goal aims to eradicate extreme poverty for all people everywhere, currently measured as living on less than $1.90 a day. It focuses on ensuring equal rights to economic resources, access to basic services, and developing social protection systems.

2?? Zero Hunger ??

This goal seeks to end hunger and ensure access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food all year round. It emphasizes sustainable agriculture, improved nutrition, and achieving food security.

3??Good Health and Well-being ??

Goal 3 aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all ages. It targets reducing maternal mortality, ending epidemics, and providing universal health coverage.

4?? Quality Education ??

Education is a cornerstone for sustainable development. This goal aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

5?? Gender Equality ??

Achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls is essential for sustainable development. This goal focuses on ending discrimination, violence, and harmful practices against women and girls.

6?? Clean Water and Sanitation ??

Access to clean water and sanitation is a fundamental human right. Goal 6 aims to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

7?? Affordable and Clean Energy ??

This goal seeks to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all. It emphasizes renewable energy sources and improving energy efficiency.

8?? Decent Work and Economic Growth ??

Promoting sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all are the focus of Goal 8. It targets improving global resource efficiency and reducing unemployment.

9?? Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure ???

Building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and fostering innovation are key to this goal. It seeks to enhance scientific research and upgrade technological capabilities.

1??0?? Reduced Inequalities ??

Reducing inequality within and among countries is essential for sustainable development. Goal 10 focuses on ensuring equal opportunities and reducing income inequality.

1??1?? Sustainable Cities and Communities ???

This goal aims to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. It emphasizes affordable housing, sustainable transport, and reducing the environmental impact of cities.

1??2?? Responsible Consumption and Production ??

Ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns is crucial for a sustainable future. Goal 12 promotes efficient use of resources and reducing waste through recycling and reusing.

1??3?? Climate Action ???

This goal calls for urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. It emphasizes strengthening resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and integrating climate change measures into policies and planning.

1??4?? Life Below Water ??

Conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas, and marine resources are the focus of Goal 14. It aims to reduce marine pollution, protect marine ecosystems, and regulate harvesting.

1??5?? Life on Land ??

Protecting, restoring, and promoting sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, managing forests, combating desertification, and halting biodiversity loss are key targets of Goal 15.

1??6?? Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions ???

Promoting peaceful and inclusive societies, providing access to justice for all, and building effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels are the aims of Goal 16.

1??7?? Partnerships for the Goals ??

Revitalizing the global partnership for sustainable development is essential for achieving the SDGs. Goal 17 emphasizes strengthening means of implementation and revitalizing the global partnership for sustainable development.

“The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.”– Robert Swan, Author

By working together towards these 17 goals, we can create a more equitable, sustainable, and prosperous world for future generations. Each goal is interconnected and designed to ensure that no one is left behind. From eradicating poverty to addressing climate change, the SDGs offer a roadmap to a better tomorrow.

Let's commit to making these goals a reality and building a brighter future for all. ??

Hi Bernd, thanks for your summary. I just stumbled upon the same page recently. However, reading the progress report from 2024, I noticed that we are far behind the curve. An interesting adjacent app is EN-ROADS, an interactive climate simulation app (https://en-roads.climateinteractive.org/scenario.html?v=24.11.0). It seems that the energy efficiency in transportation and buildings/industries has the biggest effect on our climate.
