#17 On Pliable, Perishable Plastic And More!
Since 1998, India has introduced several measures to manage plastic waste. One of the major initiatives was the introduction of the Plastic Waste Management Rules in 2016, which focused on bringing in new measures to tackle the growing problems of plastic pollution in India. Since then, these rules were subsequently amended to include concepts of 'extended producer responsibility' and bans on single-use plastic.
The Environment Ministry is looking to amend these rules once again and your feedback is being sought before they are finalised. To further help waste management efforts, the latest draft amendment, Draft Plastic Waste Management (Second Amendment) Rules, 2023, introduces new categories to distinguish between different types of plastic packaging and a new category of biodegradable plastic.?
