1600km Solo Cycling in 9 Days: Career Lessons Learned
This time 3 years ago I was preparing for the great ride that in 9 days and 1600km would have taken me from Manchester (UK) to Genoa (Italy).
Motivation at the start were high, as I was riding to raise funds for Rekko Guatemala through an initiative called CyclingforRekko which led me to donate over 2000euros.
I believe that what I learned through this experience, its easily transfigurable in life and in our career paths.
Here my main learnings from the experience:
- Brain not legs. In endurance sports, fitness is important but brain fitness is even more important. If your mind is convinced that you can, then you will.
- Shoot high, but not too high. My end goal was 1600km in front of me but I got there setting myself 1 km goals: reaching one after the other I got to the end. This will help you remain positive all the way through.
- Reason over emotions. Emotions fluctuate every hour: from joy to despair then back to joy. Remember use your reason to moderate your emotions (both the positive and the negative ones).
- Don't forget about your needs. While focusing on the goal, don't forget about yourself. You need to eat, drink and sleep properly to get to the end of such an effort. Forget one of the previous and your journey is finished.
