Mattingly's?2nd Bronze Star Medal w/Valor Citation reads:For meritorious service in connection with operations against the enemy from 1 November 1968 to 16 January 1969 as advisor to a Vietnamese military unit in Chuong Thien Province, Republic of Vietnam. Petty Officer MATTINGLY trained, supervised and directed over one hundred personnel in conducting paramilitary night operations against the Viet Cong infrastructure. Under his leadership, the Chuong Thien force was molded into one of the most effective small military units in the province; one which was highly respected by both military and the civilian community. During this period, Petty Officer MATTINGLY participated in over forty combat operations, and often engaged in fierce battles against the enemy. He was mortally wounded on 16 January 1969 while leading his unit in an attack against a heavily armed Viet Cong force. His outstanding performance of duty significantly contributed to a highly efficient and combat ready Vietnamese military unit. SEAL TEAM TWO - REPUBLIC OF VIETNAM
Born on August 1st 1942, in Maryland, Harry Mattingly enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. Completing basic training in 1960, followed by Submarine School in Connecticut, he was first assigned to USS Crevalle and then to the destroyer USS Harlan R. Dickson.
In May 1962, just months after the formation of the SEAL Teams, Petty Officer Harry A. Mattingly volunteered for UDTR training with Class 27 at NAB Little Creek, Virginia. Graduating in November, he served with UDT-21 for just under a year before leaving active duty. The Escalation of the conflict in Vietnam saw Mattingly return to active duty in September 1965, re-joining his green brothers now at SEAL Team Two. Mattingly was among the first East coast SEALs to deploy to Vietnam in January 1967, with Larry Bailey and Bob Gormly's 3rd platoon and returning for a second tour in October 1968. On January 16th 1969, two years after first arriving in the Republic of Vietnam, Harry A. Mattingly Jr was killed in action while leading a PRU force in support of the CIA’s Phoenix programme.
