Welcome to?Edition #16 of 'This Week in Web3' - an all-in-one source for the most interesting Blockchain, Web3 and Metaverse content on LinkedIn, as curated by?me! If you didn't catch these awesome posts, here's a quick recap...
?? Blockchain is in the Eye of the Beholder...
Blockchain and Crypto is all a matter of perspective... And there are a few important things that most people don't see (yet). Some will 'just get it' while others don't, as their incentive systems, orthodoxies and bias will cause them to fear or reject anything that is too different or difficult.
? Those who 'get it' will:
1. Be open to new business models
2. Embrace open source
3. Value collaboration
4. Be willing to share in value created
5. Regularly use the word 'Rabbit Hole'
? Those who don't 'get it' will:
1. Be inflexible and look for reasons things will fail
2. Be tied to companies or industries where to win others have to lose
3. Have incentives or compensation systems that make it hard to move, change, or leave
4. Try to hoard power or influence
5. Regularly cite negative examples and see failures as reasons to reject innovation, rather than to continue pursuing it
I'm not saying that Blockchain and Web3 have any divine right to adoption or success. Technology (for now) is implemented by humans to solve problems, and for now the number of humans with drive, capital and a team in the 'get it' category are still relatively few.
Check out the full article and the community's additional points on how to know if some does or doesn't 'get' Web3 here.
????♀? Gently Does It...
Want to understand Bitcoin but haven’t read the Bitcoin Whitepaper yet? Fear not. The marvellous Antony Lewis and Brave New Coin have created a 'gentle' guide to understanding why Bitcoin matters, and what it can be used for.
Bitcoin is the technology that kick-started the investment and development of Blockchain, Digital Asset and Web3. Yet it is misunderstood by so many people:
Is Blockchain Bitcoin? Is Bitcoin a chain or an app? What can you actually DO with Bitcoin technology?…
Check out this super helpful and easy-to-digest paper that shouldn’t really be needed at this stage, but most definitely is, here.
?? Can I Pay With Blockchain?...
Which will be the ‘killer app’ for Blockchain and Crypto? This week's Friday Poll was inspired by the hype and shade being thrown at a few Web3 implementations this week. And it seems like the community voted for the 'classics'
?? Supply Chain: We’re seeing new applications launching but still some vanilla critique like: ‘Changing the database isn’t innovation’
??? Loyalty: Lufthansa dropped a new app this week for miles, but some are still saying: ‘NFT ownership and trading won’t take off’
?? Payments: Then there’s good old fashioned ‘magical internet money’ where we can move value borderlessly, 24/7. Although with some cryptos (not stables) it can feel a bit like paying for Starbucks with your pension...
Maybe you have a better use case for Blockchain and Crypto that you think will the breakout moment for Web3? Check out the community's comments and suggestions and the original post here.
?? Enterprise Blockchain is THIS Hard...
POV: Enterprise teams trying to work with Blockchain & Crypto in 2023…
I’ve been working with decentralised technology and enterprises for 8 years now. And it STILL isn’t easy to deploy DApps and NFTs event though the tech is ‘mature’. There’s still a bunch of hoops that companies need to jump through from internal process perspectives…
…and we STILL don’t have stable and predictable regulation on digital assets, crypto transactions and compliance in most countries today (though many are trying)
We even have some nations proposing to ‘wage war’ against crypto. Waging war against code. In 2023!…
Here’s a list of some of the biggest challenges I’ve seen to enterprises using decentralised applications, launching digital assets or NFTs:
- Cost of internal process change
- Lack of objective business case
- Ego of senior leaders
- Lack of technical talent
领英推荐
- Unclear regulation across multiple jurisdictions where companies operate- Inability to drive network effect
- Hype cycle moved to another technology
- Key management seemed too hard- Fear of transparency
Check out the full post (including cool video) and more commentary on the challenges and the community's experience around enterprise Blockchain here.
?? EY-Parthenon Forecast Digital Assets to Provide $28Tn in Value
The smart folk at EY ( Igor Mikhalev , Prashant Kher and team) have put together a really interesting forecast and explainer for where, how and how much Digital Assets on Blockchain technology could impact the economy by 2030.
There remain some hurdles around regulation, the need for 'trusted' service providers (not necessarily intermediaries, though), technology education, and challenges with the transparency of data and metadata on some Blockchain infrastructure...
The full report can be found here, and includes:
- Tokenisation value forecast to 2030
- What is Tokenisation
- Potential hurdles for investors
- Which institutions are most interested
- Digital asset value chain (old vs. new)
- Tokenisation market segmentation
- Tokenisation target architecture
Definitely a 'Must Read' folks ??
?? Interoperable Blockchains & The Future of DeFi w. Derek Yoo of Moonbeam Network on Blockchain Won't Save the World Podcast
Why haven't we made interoperable Blockchains, yet? Why should we care? And is Decentralised Finance a credible alternative to big banks?...
All big questions in the world of Web3, and ones that Derek is very familiar with. Moonbeam was one of the first 5 'parachains' to launch on Polkadot, and now was over 1 MILLION smart contracts deployed. That's big. But the macro market story will tell you, we're not quite at 'mass adoption' of DeFi, and we're still seeing a lot of Blockchain maximalism in the world, as new chains grapple for product-market fit. We get some amazing insights from an OG chain builder - rewatch here.
?? Gamifying Crypto Exchanges with Christian Niedermueller from Blocktrade on Blockchain Won't Save the World Podcast
Want to learn what Crypto exchanges are REALLY about? And how gaming may be a game changer for Web3. Listen to this!…
