15 Years of iPhone

It’s hard to believe the iPhone is now 15 years old… I vividly remember going to buy the original iPhone??.

Back in 2007 the iPhone had no third party apps… no cut copy and paste. But still holding it in your hand did feel like the promise of the future. A simple portable device designed with simplicity as a priority. The O2 store staff scoffed why is he spending ￡269 in addition to a 12 month contract.. How times have changed with the flagship models now costing over ￡1000

My college lecturers also were puzzled.. But what about Microsoft office support?! Where’s the stylus?! The Nokia N95 has GPS and 3G! This will never take off! I’ll stay with my HP iPAQ PDA.

It’s amazing to see how much the original iPhone got right.. the glass touch screen that invited users to explore this revolutionary UI. The home screen which is still clearly recognisable as an iPhone even today.

Throughout my university degree the mobile revolution grew. The iPhone quickly gained 3G support and its most requested feature. Apps.. this was a revolution which I don’t feel even Apple expected to be as bigger hit as it was. Instagram, Uber, Netflix all came alive during this revolution! Seeing this I knew I had found my calling so I pursued a career in mobile app development. It’s now hard to imagine a world without them. Even my local GP allows booking using its app… How far we’ve come!

Seeing my daughter growing up playing with her iPad and intuitively understanding how to use the apps without a manual makes me smile. We’ve come along way but its not over yet…?

So to the next 15 years ??… While a future with the iPhone 28 does sound unlikely I welcome whatever comes next and hopefully it remains true to the KISS principle (Keep it simple, stupid)!
