15-Year-Old Innovator Solves Global Waste Crisis with Solar-Powered Innovation
With cities growing quickly, more people, and changing habits, the world is struggling with a huge waste problem. In India alone, city areas create 1,33,760 metric tonnes of waste daily, but only 91,152 tonnes are collected and just 25,884 tonnes are treated properly. A major challenge is sorting this waste effectively.
In an amazing breakthrough, Arush Nath, a 15-year-old from Gurugram, has invented SAWT, the world’s first Solar-Powered AI Waste Sorting Bin. This innovative bin automatically sorts trash into recyclable or organic waste, providing a revolutionary solution to the global waste crisis.
The Making of SAWT
Arush Nath’s journey began when he noticed large landfills and wanted to find a solution. His interest in renewable energy and artificial intelligence grew during summer programs, including at Brown University and the Inspirit AI program. Seeing how people improperly threw away trash, Arush realized improper waste sorting was a major problem. This inspired him to create SAWT, combining solar power and AI technology to automate waste sorting.
How SAWT Works
SAWT uses the YOLO-v8 vision AI model, trained on over 45,000 images, to identify and sort waste into recyclable or organic categories. Users simply put their trash into the bin, and the AI system does the sorting, making the process easy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
