Hello,
In this analysis my focus was on the UEFA European Championship. My analysis includes some interesting facts that I found and analysis of major players.
The purpose of this newsletter is to connect the story with the numbers, or sometimes the numbers with the actual story. It is, of course, my own view on the topics without any investment recommendation. I hope we can start conversations around the points below.
Let's start with the forecast for EURO 2024. While the EURO 2020 (organised actually in 2021) were 1,88 bn Euro, UEFA estimated in their budget a 2,4 bn Euro revenue for EURO 2024. This is almost double compared with EURO 2012. This is a 25% increase compared to 2016 which according to Sports Business Institute Barcelona is better for comparison as in EURO 2020 we had the impact of COVID-19.
Some reports, assess that EURO 2024 will bring 1 billion Euro to Germany from tourism. "This corresponds to about 0.1% of economic output in the second quarter of the year, with Germany′s hospitality and food retail sectors set to benefit the most from the games, the country's top economic research institute said." cited by Reuters here https://www.reuters.com/markets/europe/euro-2024-tourism-bring-1-billion-germany-study-shows-2024-06-14/
Moreover, the same source points out that "more than an additional 600,000 foreign tourists and 1.5 million additional overnight stays are expected during the championship".
EURO 2024 is organised by the football governing body UEFA. Here are some numbers related to the evolution of UEFA EURO Championship since the edition in Sweden in 1992. We can notice the growth since the Portugal edition in 2004, mainly because of broadcasting rights, as seen below.
While in 2000 in Belgium and The Netherlands editions, the Broadcasting rights were 93 million euro, this value increase to 560 million Euro at the next edition. For the EURO 2024 edition, the forecast is around 1,4 billion Euro according to this source: https://www.sportspromedia.com/insights/analysis/euro-2024-commercial-preview-broadcasters-sponsors-stadiums-revenue/
In the same time, UEFA expects 568 million Euro in Commercial Rights (higher from the 520,8 million Euro in EURO 2020). But, comparing this with the value in 2004, and the evolution afterwards, it's clear that this event has attracted more interest from companies. Another reason, might be also the rise of social media and that the actual event become an entire experience for followers during 1 month and becomes not only a European but a global one. Moreover, the rise of Broadcasting revenue might signal presence in more countries.
According to UEFA "With more than 50 million ticket requests in the two application phases, UEFA EURO 2024 is officially the most demanded UEFA European Championship of all time. In order to accommodate the high number of requests, close to 2.3 million tickets (or 85%) of the 2.7 million tickets were made available to the general public and to fans of the teams." this graph by Sports Business Institute Barcelona, highlights the evolution of the ticket sales by comparing different editions. It is obvious that comparing 2024 with 2016 is more relevant because of 2 reasons:
UEFA European Championship plays an important role in UEFA's revenue. Check also my previous analysis from the newsletter on Football and FIFA's revenues here: Football: beyond the competition, focusing on financials > https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/football-beyond-competition-focusing-financials-costin-ciora-phd-xoeje/?trackingId=tqQgva%2FLQwyhmE5ifcFAyA%3D%3D
We can observe that the actual cycle is between the European Championships, meaning a 4 year cycle, and that while during the other years National team Competitions have revenues, the men's senior club competition revenues like UEFA Champions League bring most of the results.
While the past cycle was affected by COVID-19 we can observe the recovery in the following period. UEFA EURO started to generate revenue since the 2022/2023 period with selling the tickets as in October 2023 more than 1,2 million tickets were on sales according to UEFA herE: https://www.uefa.com/news-media/news/0285-18f607449be6-73d2d50b9775-1000--1-2-million-uefa-euro-2024-tickets-to-be-on-sale-as-of-3-oc/
In the same time, we can observe the revenue without UEFA EURO and the forecasted increased revenue in 2024/2024 for UEFA from 4,27 bn Euro to 5,1 bn Euro. Still, UEFA Champions League dominates the revenue stream with 3,2 bn in 2022/2023 and a forecasted 3,96 bn Euro in 2024/2025.
Of course, the European Championship rely on strong leagues. Below you can see the leagues with the highest number of players with Premier League, Italy, Bundesliga and Spain dominating the tournament.
Moreover, a statistic that was presented during the tournament is the value of the teams. While England has the highest value of the players (cumulated 1382 million Euro), while Romania has the lowest value of players (78.1 million Euro). In the final 8 qualified for the quarter-finals we can see the first 6 most valuable squads, but we can also see number 13 & 14: Turkey & Switzerland. Italy & Belgium went home. So, that's why football is so great: you can see surprises and more story behind the numbers.
Finally, check the prize money for the countries attending EURO 2024. For instance, Romania that reached the Round of 16, had a win an a draw, will receive 12,25 million Euro. If the European Champion had 3 wins in the group, eventually will receive 33,25 million Euro.
Looking forward to see the final stages.
Things to watch:

Excellent study, thank you! It can be observed on a quantitative basis, once again the exceptional achievement of our national team! Despite the fact that we have the lowest pecuniary quantified "value" (the discrepancy compared to the Netherlands was 1:10) we recorded beautiful results! Spirit before matter (money in particular).
