Recently I was made aware that AI of ‘me’ falsely endorsing Donald Trump’s presidential run was posted to his site. It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation.

Taylor Swift, officially endorsing Kamala Harris for U.S. president office on Tuesday night.

?? BIG TECH UPDATES

OPENAI

• Released o1 (codenamed Strawberry) as its new AI model with “reasoning” abilities.
• o1-preview & o1-mini are available for ChatGPT Plus & Team users and Enterprise and Edu users will get access early next week.
• A “completely new optimization algorithm” has been used to train the model.
• Drastic improvements are reported on a wide range of benchmarks, outperforming models like?GPT-4o?and?Claude 3.5 Sonnet?in over?50,000 matchups:

• o1 costs 3-4x more than GPT-4o to devs ($60 per 1M output tokens on o1-preview vs. $15 on GPT-4o.) This sparked debate over inference costs due to its extensive "thinking" process and coincided with rumors of OpenAI seeking $11.5 billion at a $150 billion valuation.
• o1 is more manipulative than GPT-4o, and carries a “medium” rating for chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear weapon risk, according to OpenAI.
• Early user tests suggest that o1 shines in complex reasoning tasks, but struggles to deliver useful outputs in coding, prompting mixed reactions.
• This appears to be the first significant leap in model type and quality since GPT-4's launch in March 2023
• Andrew Mayne's o1 prompting advice: "Don’t think of it like a traditional chat model. Frame o1 in your mind as a really smart friend you’re going to send a DM to solve a problem. She’ll answer back with a very well thought out explanation that walks you through the steps."

ANTHROPIC

• introduced Workspaces to the Anthropic Console, allowing users to manage multiple Claude deployments, set custom spend or rate limits, group API keys, and control access with user roles.
• valuation has reached $18.4 billion, putting it among the top privately held tech companies.

APPLE

• Introduced the iPhone 16 lineup, featuring Apple Intelligence, ChatGPT integration, advanced camera capabilities, and the powerful A18 chip, but some AI features are?criticized as "late, unfinished & clumsy"?compared to competitors.

OTHERS

• Adobe introduces a text-to-video AI feature in Firefly.
• Mistral releases Pixtral 12B multimodal model.
• Facebook, Instagram are?making labels less prominent on content edited by AI.
• Gemini Live?being rolled out to free users on Android.
• Salesforce?releases AI agent suite Agentforce to handle services.
• Google?brings Audio Overview to NotebookLM.
• AI researcher Fei-Fei Li raises $230M for World Labs, a venture aiming to build 3D-aware software using image and data analysis. Investors include Ashton Kutcher, Eric Schmidt, and Marc Benioff.

• ???????? US approves Nvidia AI chip sales to UAE's G42, considers Saudi exports. Saudi Arabia may access advanced AI models if it reduces China tech ties.
• ???? Political dynamics suggest a high veto chance for California's AI regulation bill SB 1047.
• ???? China declined to sign an agreement banning AI from controlling nuclear weapons, raising concerns about the future of AI in warfare.
• ???? Despite US export curbs, Nvidia's high-end chips are reaching China at lower prices than in the US. A FT report reveals Chinese data centers charge $6/hour for a server with eight Nvidia A100 processors, compared to $10/hour in the US.
