#15 A Bulletin for Nature Lovers
Hello Civisens
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has declared Dachigam National Park, Thajwas (Baltal) Wildlife Sanctuary, and Overa-Aru Wildlife Sanctuary as eco-sensitive zones (ESZ) in Jammu and Kashmir. This is to protect the area's beautiful ecology and limit industrial activity.
To ensure the proper management of these eco-sensitive zones, a Zonal Master Plan will be developed within two years of the final notification being published. The plan will focus on restoring deforested areas, conserving water bodies, managing groundwater and soil, and addressing the needs of local communities.?
For tourism in the eco-sensitive zones, a tourism plan will be developed by the Union Territory Tourism Department. New hotels or resorts will only be permitted within 1 km of the ESZs in designated areas specified in the Tourism Plan. All other tourism activities must comply with MoEFCC and National Tiger Conservation Authority guidelines.
Certain industrial activities will be prohibited, some will be regulated, and some shall be promoted in the ESZ. A monitoring committee will be set up to ensure compliance with the notification and other applicable laws.
We all play a critical role in ensuring that these eco-sensitive zones remain the beautiful and thriving natural habitats that they are. Hence, your comments and suggestions are essential in achieving this goal. The summarized draft is available on Civis' platform, and we eagerly await your valuable feedback. The deadline for the same is 25th November 2023.
