Meet Michael, a thriving CEO in his mid-40s and father of three. Each morning, he would gaze out of his luxurious apartment window, admiring the city skyline bathed in the glow of the rising sun. As a top executive at a renowned organization, Michael had achieved what many aspire to: a seven-figure income, a distinguished status, and the authority accompanying his role. The world beyond his window appeared brimming with potential; however, behind closed doors, he was sinking under the weight of his discontent.
The persistent requirements of his role permeated every aspect of his life. The unyielding pressure to succeed while adhering to a vision that didn't align with his own steadily suffocated him. Among his teams, the atmosphere seemed perfect. However, his relationships with investors, board members, and company proprietors were strained. These stakeholders desired a CEO who would act as an executor of their predetermined strategy, rather than contribute his distinct vision. The impact of this dynamic was inescapable – his health deteriorated, once-prosperous relationships began to disintegrate, and the happiness he previously experienced in life became nearly extinct.
In a society that often equates success with perseverance and resilience, the idea of quitting can be seen as a sign of weakness or failure. Societal expectations and cultural pressures play a significant role in shaping our beliefs about quitting, which can make it difficult for individuals to critically evaluate their personal circumstances. Social media is filled with messages from self-proclaimed gurus and life coaches, urging us to "never give up" and "keep pushing forward," often at the expense of our mental health and well-being. These messages fail to consider each individual's unique situation and often neglect the importance of self-awareness and adaptability.
The sooner you recognize and walk away from what doesn't serve you, the sooner you'll have the energy, space, and resources to invest in what does. While persistence is undoubtedly important, there are times when knowing when to quit is the most intelligent and beneficial choice we can make.
Here are five key points to consider when evaluating the power of quitting:
To determine when it's time to walk away, consider creating "kill criteria" in advance, which are specific signals that indicate it's time to quit. For instance, in a job setting, a kill criterion could be a persistent lack of work-life balance, a toxic environment, or not being able to align with the company's vision. In a personal relationship, the kill criteria might include a consistent lack of trust, irreconcilable differences, or an unhealthy dynamic that refuses to improve.

Additionally, seek the support of a trusted friend, mentor, or preferably a therapist who can assist you in deciding based on your long-term interests. This support can help you navigate the complex emotions and potential backlash that can come from making the decision to quit.
My aim is not to encourage quitting merely due to obstacles; rather, I wish to present the concept of quitting as a valid option to contemplate when deciding the most effective strategy for navigating life's unavoidable challenges. At times, a challenge may simply be a stepping stone on the path to success, while in other instances, it could signal that the road we're on leads to a dead end.
Michael's story serves as a cautionary tale, highlighting the importance of knowing when to quit, whether it's a job or a relationship with a partner or friend. Remember, sometimes persisting in unfavourable circumstances can be a detrimental option that can lead to unhappiness. If you find yourself struggling, don't hesitate to seek help, consult a therapist, and ultimately, have the courage to quit when it's the right choice for your well-being.
Keep in mind that quitting can be a potent instrument for personal development, empowering you to reshape your journey and chase after the life you genuinely deserve.
