Now that the Paris 2024 Olympics have come to a spectacular close, one chapter of dreams has ended, making way for a new one. Around the world, many athletes, driven by fresh ambitions, are beginning their journey toward the 2028 LA Olympic Games.
In the quiet stillness of a New York City school gym, where echoes of the game linger like whispers of dreams, a young athlete stands alone. The year is 2024, and in their heart beats a singular aspiration—to represent Team USA in the 2028 Olympic Games. For this athlete, the countdown has begun. They have around 1,400 days to transform a dream into reality.
The question is: Is it worth it?
The Dream
The Olympic Games are the pinnacle of sports—a global stage where the best of the best compete not just for medals but for the pride of their nations. To stand among them, to feel the weight of the jersey emblazoned with the stars and stripes, is the dream of many, yet realized by few.
For American handball players, the journey to the Olympics is particularly challenging. The sport, though popular in many parts of the world, particularly in Europe, is still growing in the United States, and opportunities to compete at the highest levels are limited.?
But for those who dare to dream, the possibility of playing in Los Angeles in 2028—on home soil—holds a magnetic allure. The truth is it’s not just about the glory; it’s about the journey. It’s about testing the limits of what you can achieve when you dedicate yourself fully to a single, audacious and in a way crazy goal.
The Reality
The road to the Olympics is anything but easy. It demands sacrifice, discipline, and an unwavering belief in yourself, even when the odds seem insurmountable. For an American handball player, the challenges are even bigger.
First, there’s the issue of access. Handball is not a mainstream sport in the United States. This means fewer clubs, fewer top-level coaches, and fewer opportunities to play against consistent challenging competition. To reach an Olympic level, you may need to seek opportunities abroad, where the sport is more developed. This could mean moving to Europe, where handball is a dominant sport, and immersing yourself in a culture where the game is revered. It’s a daunting idea, but it’s a step many American athletes have taken before, trading comfort for the chance to compete with and learn from the best.
Next comes the challenge of balancing life. If you’re still in school, you’ll need to manage your studies while committing to a rigorous training schedule. If you’re working, you may need to make tough decisions about your career. The Olympic dream demands more than just physical preparation; it requires mental fortitude, resilience, and the ability to push through when everything inside you says it’s impossible.
And then, there’s the financial aspect. Handball in the U.S. doesn’t attract the same level of sponsorship or financial support as more mainstream sports. You may need to fund your own travel, training, and competition expenses. It’s a significant investment, and there’s no guarantee of a return.

The Journey
But here’s the truth: Even if you don’t make it to the Olympics, the journey itself is worth it. Pursuing a dream of this magnitude changes you. It forces you to dig deep, to discover what you’re truly capable of. Along the way, you’ll forge bonds with teammates who share your passion, learn from coaches who challenge you, and compete in matches that test your resolve.
You’ll learn to set goals and work tirelessly to achieve them. You’ll experience the highs of victory and the lows of defeat. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of your strengths and weaknesses, and you’ll develop the kind of resilience that will serve you well in every aspect of your life.
And if you’re young enough, 2032 is not far off. The experiences and skills you gain in the next 1,400 days will set the foundation for your next Olympic journey. By then, you’ll be stronger, wiser, and even more determined.
The Leap
So, is it worth it? Only you can answer that. But if you’re willing to take the leap, to dedicate the next 1,400 days of your life to this dream, know that you’re embarking on a journey that will shape you in ways you can’t yet imagine. Whether you make it to the Olympic Games or not, you will emerge from this experience as a better athlete and a stronger person.
The Olympic Games are not just about winning medals; they’re about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. For those who dare to dream, the journey is worth every sacrifice, every drop of sweat, every moment of doubt. Because in the end, the real victory is not in the destination, but in the journey itself.
As you step onto the court today, remember this: The next 1,400 days could be the most transformative of your life. The dream is within reach, but it’s up to you to make it a reality. So, lace up your shoes, pick up the ball, and let the journey begin.
The pursuit of an Olympic dream is about more than just reaching the Games. It’s about the lessons learned along the way, the friendships forged, the strength gained, and the memories made. It’s about becoming the best version of yourself, no matter the outcome.?
So, is it worth it?
Yes. A thousand times, yes.?

6 个月Worth it? Hell yeah! I never got close to the Olympics (other than watching it), but the sport of handball has allowed me to grow, compete, learn how to lose, build up those around me, and - most importantly - make great friends for life around the world. Shkumbin Mustafa, thanks for opening up a path like this for so many kids in NYC and beyond ??
