$14 p/h, really?
Not referencing any government reports, statistics or any " research papers", $14 per hour is a slap in the face.
I can go into any Walmart after 4-5pm to make purchases and usually there are only about 3 lanes with cashiers. The lines are so long, that self-checkout is more than tempting.
So now I've walked the store and selected my items, scanned my items, paid the total, then I bag my items and carry them out. I've done half of a cashier's and all of a bagger's job. They get paid, but I don't even get a discount. There is something wrong with this picture. They are not paying their retail employees a livable wage, but I'm supposed to applaud this lesson in greed?
I think NOT!
Yes, we are living in a time of prices skyrocketing and it is more difficult to live comfortably because of this. But, it's sad when persons who are working a full-time job with benefits can and do apply for government assistance like SNAP benefits and are approved.
So, I'm happy about the Walmart pay bump, but it ISN'T enough.
Large companies who can clearly afford to pay more need to do so to help the economy. It's a no brainer. If I earn more, then I can spend more. When we spend more within our means, the economy grows.
Just my humble opinion.
