Hello H.A.I.R aficionados

It's great to hear such lovely feedback about this newsletter. Thanks, in particular to JAMES WHITELOCK?? for the kind comments at last week's HireAra launch party.

This week, I wanted to follow up on Hung Lee 's #brainfoodlive session on hiring for AI. It left me thinking about the global AI job market. As you know, I also run Bot Jobs - The Job Board for Conversational AI roles. But I wanted to be a bit more broad, as there's a lot more to the world of AI than Conversational.

So let's dive in...

The Global AI Job Market: A Deep Dive into Opportunities and Innovation

I started by looking into the top 10 markets for AI - based on investment, startups and the number of roles being hired for in the first month of this year (purely shown on LinkedIn jobs).

The data here helped -

I then correlated it as a Matrix of AI Ecosystem Variables to show the correlation coefficients among all the numerical data, providing insights into how different aspects of the AI ecosystem are related to each other. For example, the strong correlation between private investment and the number of AI startups indicates a close relationship between financial support and the emergence of new companies in the AI field.

So, from this data, can I create a comprehensive analysis that highlights the evolving landscape of AI-driven job markets, the influence of startups and investment on employment opportunities, and the strategic positioning of countries in the global AI ecosystem? All from the viewpoint of my Recruitment and HR colleagues? I think so...

As we know, the job market is undergoing significant transformations, shaping the future of HR and recruitment. My dive into the above data sheds light on how different countries are emerging as leaders in AI opportunities.

The USA: A Beacon for AI Talent

At the pinnacle of AI job opportunities, the United States boasts an impressive figure of 11,003 AI-related job adverts in the past month. This is supported by a thriving ecosystem of 4,643 AI startups and a substantial private investment of $249 billion from 2013-2022. What does this mean for recruiters? It signals a fertile ground for recruiting top-tier talent in a competitive and innovative environment.

Global Giants and Their Influence

The presence of tech behemoths like Microsoft, Meta, and Google significantly contributes to the AI landscape, driving forward innovation and setting benchmarks for AI applications across industries. Their commitment to AI research and development not only fosters a culture of excellence but also creates a plethora of job opportunities within the sector. How does this affect your recruitment strategy? Aligning with the trends and technologies championed by these industry leaders can help attract candidates at the cutting edge of AI development.

Spotlight on Emerging AI Hubs

Consider Israel, for instance, with its 236 AI job postings. It's a prime example of how strategic investment and a vibrant startup culture catalyse high-quality job opportunities. Despite its modest size, Israel's AI ecosystem, buoyed by $11 billion in private investment and a solid base of 402 startups, illustrates that focused efforts can create rich opportunities for AI innovation and employment.

Israel's strategic collaborations with global tech giants and its integration into the international AI research community enhance its attractiveness as a hub for AI opportunities. These partnerships not only bring in external investment but also facilitate knowledge exchange, making Israel a nexus for AI innovation that attracts talent from around the world.

The UK and China paint diverse pictures of AI prominence. With a well-rounded approach leading to 1,212 job postings, 630 startups, and $18 billion in private investment, the UK reflects a mature market aiming for sustainable growth. Conversely, China's hefty investment of $95 billion into 1,337 startups, yielding 740 job postings, highlights a strategic drive to lead in the AI domain.

The Triangular Dynamics of Investment, Innovation, and Jobs

The link between private investment, startup creation, and job postings is clear. Countries with robust investments in AI witness a surge in startup activity and job opportunities, indicating a thriving environment for AI talents and recruiters. This nexus of investment and innovation is crucial for fostering employment in the AI sector.

Navigating the AI Job Market: A Guide for HR and Recruitment Professionals

For those in HR and recruitment in the AI domain, grasping these dynamics is essential. Identifying areas with significant investment and startup activity can refine recruitment efforts, align strategies with evolving trends, and foresee changes in the AI job market. Moreover, the global spread of AI opportunities encourages a diversified talent acquisition approach, recognising the potential of emerging hubs alongside traditional tech strongholds.

Looking Ahead

As AI continues to reshape industries, the demand for skilled professionals capable of navigating and shaping this new landscape is paramount. For HR and recruitment professionals, staying informed about global trends, investment patterns, and startup ecosystems is key to securing the best AI talent. Whether it's capitalising on the vast opportunities in the USA, embracing the innovative spirit of Israel, or exploring the growing markets in the UK and China, adopting a strategic recruitment approach can unlock the full potential of AI for your organisation.

Need a solicitor? Better Call GPT!

A lot of my conversations, recently, have been about what tasks LLMs are better at than recruiters. Well, when I saw that this paper was released a couple of weeks ago, I was really interested in seeing what the impact of 'task displacement' was on Solicitors (seeing as a good friend believes he is un-automatable as a solicitor):

What this paper found was that “Advanced models match or exceed human accuracy in determining legal issues. In speed, LLMs complete reviews in mere seconds… offering a staggering 99.97 percent reduction” when compared to Junior lawyers & legal outsourcers (LPOs).

Bard becomes Gemini

Is this just noise, or is Google finally ready to compete fiercely? Does the company have the management focus and tools now to even execute this if there is a will?

Google is going beyond OpenAI with this because it is integrating Gemini Advanced features into Google Workspace (i.e., Gmail, Docs, Slides, etc.). This is not an option with ChatGPT. To do this in the Microsoft world, you need a separate license to use 365 Copilot. ChatGPT is not integrated into other productivity software so it is an island. Google has bundling for users that also employ its other software solutions.

Google has a lot of work to do. However, it does dominate search and online videos. That is its path to engage users by nudging them through their everyday activities that already cross paths with Google services.

The new assistant era is taking shape. ChatGPT entered. Copilot Entered. Perplexity Entered. Google Assistant is becoming Gemini by way of Bard. Alexa and Siri will not be far behind. The knowing assistant is something everyone needed, and now we are starting to see the merge with the doing assistant.

Bite-sized knowledge: The psychology behind recognising an avatar as non-human

Did you know that our brains have a dedicated area specifically for recognising faces? It's called the fusiform face area (FFA), and it was identified by Nancy Kanwisher in 1997.

This remarkable region allows faces to be processed more rapidly than other objects, bypassing the brain's usual interpretive channels. Interestingly, the FFA is located near the amygdala, which is known as the brain's emotional centre. Our brains are truly fascinating!

When creating videos, incorporating your face on camera is essential for building a genuine connection with your audience. Regardless of the language you use with AI translation, the presence of real faces is a vital element in captivating viewers and fostering a deeper connection.

This completely aligns with the idea (and reality) that making a believable computer-generated face is exceedingly complex and can be recognised as "fake" by almost any human.

Regulation Updates

Keeping this section going as there's been great feedback on the usefullness of keeping up to date with regulations...

EU AI Act clears major hurdle

Following a marathon of negotiations, the European Parliament, Commission and Council reached a political agreement on the EU Artificial Intelligence Act 8 Dec. 2023. Representatives from EU member states voted unanimously in favour of the draft AI Act, paving the way for the final steps in the approval process. Once in force, it will likely be the world's first comprehensive regulation of AI.

While the AI Act will enter into force 20 days after its publication in the Official Journal of the EU, the act’s latest draft indicates a phased approach to the implementation and enforcement.

This resource shows some of the most important dates and milestones for the future implementation of the AI Act.

UK proposes regulator funding for AI enforcement

The U.K. Department for Science, Innovation and Technology announced more than 100 million GBP in funding to "support regulators and advance research and innovation on AI" as part of a response to a March 2023 white paper on a proposed AI framework. The DSIT will require reports on regulators' AI efforts by April while indicating the potential for "introducing future targeted, binding requirements for most advanced general-purpose AI systems."

Elizabeth Kelly named US Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute director

Elizabeth Kelly, the former economic policy adviser for U.S. President Joe Biden, was named director of the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute, Time reports. Kelly said, "The Safety Institute's ambitious mandate to develop guidelines, evaluate models, and pursue fundamental research will be vital to addressing the risks and seizing the opportunities of AI."

Training

Well, it seems as though this is becoming a top priority for Recruitment/TA Leaders out there.

I am receiving several enquiries per week about my 3-hour Interactive Generative AI and Prompt Training for Recruitment Teams.

This course is designed to equip recruiters and talent acquisition professionals with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the digital age of recruitment. You can gain a solid understanding of AI and begin utilising AI tools in a matter of hours - enhancing your productivity, streamlining your daily tasks, and boosting your overall recruitment efficiency and effectiveness.

Prompts To Try

Today I’m going to share some information about how emotional language can help you get better outputs from LLMs.

Why do emotional prompts work?

When using generative AI tools like ChatGPT, a large language model (LLM) is working to generate text and images. These models have been trained on a vast amount of data from the internet. Up until 2023, the content on the internet was almost entirely written by humans. Thus, LLMs are trained on human behaviour, our tendencies, tones, etc. In this way, LLMs hold up a mirror to ourselves. This is why things like emotional pleas and reasoning phrases can improve your prompts.?

Imagine that if your partner said “Please take rubbish out now or else you’re sleeping on the couch tonight” instead of “Please take out the rubbish”. Which do you think would prompt you to take action faster and do a better job? I know which one would get me moving! The same thing occurs when chatting with LLMs.

So let’s jump into a few examples, spanning multiple use cases, that you can start using right away.

"Write you answer and give me a confidence score between 0-1 for your answer"
"This is very important for my career"
"You'd better be sure"
"Take pride in your work and give it your best. Your commitment to excellence sets you apart"
Are you sure that's your final answer? It might be worth taking another look"
