13th Annual Forbes Healthcare Summit 2024: Panel Discussion - Is There a Future for Retail Health?

Introduction

On December 4, 2024, I had the privilege of virtually attending the 13th Annual Forbes Healthcare Summit in New York, a renowned gathering of thought leaders shaping the future of healthcare. Being invited by Forbes to this prestigious event was a testament to the value of cross-sector dialogue in addressing critical healthcare challenges.

Among the diverse sessions, the panel discussion titled “Is There a Future for Retail Health?” stood out for its forward-thinking perspectives. Moderated by Forbes Senior Healthcare Contributor Bruce Japsen , the panel featured:

- Mrs. Annie Lamont , Managing Partner and Co-Founder of Oak HC/FT ,

- Mr. Jim Rechtin , President and CEO of Humana Inc.

This session delved into how retail healthcare is transforming care delivery, focusing on accessibility, technology integration, and patient-centric models.

Key Takeaways from the Panel Discussion

1. The Rise of Retail Health: A Consumer-Centric Revolution

Retail healthcare, often defined as a B2C model, is reshaping how patients interact with providers. Mrs. Annie Lamont highlighted the significance of meeting patients where they are—whether through virtual care, home-based services, or localized clinics. Retail health prioritizes visibility and convenience, ensuring patients can seamlessly connect with care providers.

2. A Focus on Seniors: Addressing Complex Health Needs

Mr. Jim Rechtin emphasized the growing need to tailor healthcare services for seniors, a demographic that often requires frequent and proactive care. Retail health models like Humana’s invest heavily in:

- Increasing accessibility, especially in underserved areas.

- Preventing downstream healthcare costs by focusing on primary and preventative care.

Notably, studies show that senior-focused clinics result in 15% fewer emergency visits and 20–30% fewer hospital readmissions compared to traditional models.

3. Investment in Primary Care and Technology

The panelists agreed on the importance of investing in primary care to address the growing provider shortage. The integration of technology, particularly AI in healthcare operations, was a recurring theme. AI is already augmenting workflows by enhancing back-office efficiencies and clinical outcomes, freeing up providers to spend more time on patient care.

Mrs. Annie Lamont underscored that while AI improves efficiency, its role in maintaining human connections in patient care remains critical; a sentiment echoed by Mr. Rechtin, who foresees AI playing a complementary role in improving care delivery.

4. Lessons from Big Players in Retail Health

Insights from major investments, such as 亚马逊 's acquisition of One Medical and VillageMD 's evolving model, underscored the importance of localized execution. Retail health models thrive when they address specific community needs, aligning business objectives with patient outcomes.

The Road Ahead for Retail Health

The discussion made it clear that retail health is poised to be a cornerstone of future healthcare systems. By blending convenience, technology, and a patient-first approach, retail health holds immense potential to democratize access to quality care.

Attending this session was a valuable opportunity to reflect on how these shifts could redefine healthcare globally. As a healthcare professional, I am inspired to explore how retail models and emerging technologies can bridge gaps in access and equity.

How do you see retail healthcare shaping the future? Let’s connect and discuss innovative ways to enhance patient experiences and outcomes.
