130 Parry Street

Innovation at the Heart of Newcastle

Designed by BKA Architecture and constructed by North Construction & Building to serve as the head office for the Cutcher & Neale accountancy practice, this commercial development at 130 Parry Street, Newcastle West, synthesises functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability.

BKA Architecture Newcastle director Allison Burrows says the project employed green design principles; the final building features green walls, vertical sun shading to protect extensive glazing on the eastern and western facades, an ‘A Grade’ warm shell internal fit-out (in line with Property Council Guidelines) and stormwater retention. Plants in the external green walls are now establishing themselves over the off-form concrete exterior panels.

Burrows notes this development responds to its urban environment, promoting pedestrian movement from the nearby Market Town shopping centre and taking advantage of opportunities to frame park views for those conducting business within the new office and retail spaces.

“We aimed to create spaces that enhance productivity while prioritising sustainability,” Burrows says.

One of the building’s most striking features is its use of green walls on its interior and exterior. As you walk towards the top-floor reception, a living green wall, ascending into a skylight, greets you. This inclusion of an indoor vertical garden is further enhanced by dual skylights that invite abundant natural light.

According to North project manager Jarred O’Brien, the aim was to create contemporary offices, augmented with cutting-edge technologies, that gave occupants the ambience of a home away from home. “The teppanyaki kitchen with its park-facing balcony is ideal for team gatherings and office functions,” adds O’Brien.

Another standout feature of 130 Parry Street is its future-proofing with digital technologies. Features include hearing augmentation and privacy glass for meeting rooms. Combining best-in-class technology and sustainable design elements such as stormwater retention and vertical sun shading, establish the building’s contemporary design values.

Capral’s Architectural Series was pivotal in ensuring the building’s design integrity, sustainability and functionality. O’Brien emphasises the contribution of the Capral window and door systems. “They are instrumental in maintaining ambient interior temperatures, energy-efficient operation, and providing an efficient way to clean and maintain the fa?ade with their operable windows.”

Capral systems used at 130 Parry Street include the 225 Series Door Suite, the 400 Series Narrowline Framing, the 900 Series Sliding Door and the 950 Series Sliding Window.

The 225 Series Door suite exemplifies versatility, offering flexibility, performance and ease of assembly. The AGS 400 Narrowline framing systems have set the standard for centre-glazed framing for over two decades. With an aesthetically balanced look, the AGS 400 Narrowline is among the range’s most versatile and adaptable framing systems. With many compatible window and door suites, the AGS 400 Narrowline framing system offers enormous design flexibility, making it ideal for commercial projects requiring a bold, modern look and high structural performance.

The 900 Series Sliding Door is at the forefront of contemporary commercial door innovation. Designed explicitly for enhanced efficiency and versatile design, this door can accommodate expansive panel dimensions of 3000mm in height and 2500mm in width. The design also offers the flexibility of multi-stack arrangements and is certified to withstand cyclonic conditions. Equipped with top-tier components such as robust double-wheel rollers and an assortment of locking mechanisms, the 900 Series Sliding Door is gaining immense traction in commercial and residential structures.

Complementing this is the AGS 950 Sliding Window system, a synthesis of robustness and performance. It, too, meets cyclonic standards and offers generous sash dimensions along with multiple configurations. Integrated with sturdy roller components, dual-point security, and efficient insect screening, the AGS 950 Sliding Window is the prime choice for projects emphasising sleek aesthetics, superior functionality, and diverse performance capabilities.

The 130 Parry Street building showcases environmental consciousness and forward-thinking design. The use of Capral Architectural Series products, along with the building’s technical and design features, enhance the building’s efficiency and the comfort and productivity of its occupants.
