It's time to finally make some money from our books!
I can't tell you how many times I hear authors say, "I'm not looking to get rich off of my book."
And I get it, I really do. But at the end of the day, you've got to at least get back what you put in! If you're an entrepreneur who has invested $5,000 into the creation of your book, wouldn't it be reasonable for you to get a return on that investment?
Beyond ROI being a driving force behind ensuring your book is a success, there's also the desire to make a real impact with your book. If you're not after money, then you're surely after impact as an indie author. Believe it or not, you still must leverage your book in order to generate that impact.
So how? How do you leverage your book for additional revenue and global impact?
As an award-winning book coach, I've helped countless business owners turn their expertise into bestselling books and beyond. During a recent workshop, I laid out 13 strategies, and the response was incredible. So I knew I had to share them with my LinkedIn community as well.
Now, you don't have to implement all 13 - honestly, even just 5 of these can make a huge difference in your bottom line. But I wanted to give you the full toolkit so you can pick and choose what works best for your unique business model. Ready to dive in? Let's get started!
- Sell your book as is. Yep, the most obvious one - simply make your book available for purchase on platforms like Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and more. This establishes you as a published author and helps you start generating revenue. Small caveat: most authors ONLY do this. You and your book are meant to do more, so please do more!
- Turn it into an online course. Your book's content is the perfect foundation for a high-ticket online course. Package that knowledge, add some interactive elements, and you've got a lucrative new income stream.
- Offer a free masterclass. Take a couple of key chapters from your book, create some killer slides, and host a value-packed master class. This helps build trust, sell books, and even land new clients.
- Launch a podcast. Transform your book's content into an engaging podcast series. Not only does this expand your reach, but it also positions you as an authority in your space, while creating awesome content to deepen your digital footprint.
- Build a mastermind. Leverage the problem-solving power of your book and create a high-end mastermind program around it. Your members will use your book as a blueprint (or even a textbook) to achieve their goals with your support.
- Create a paid community. Take the core idea behind your book and turn it into an exclusive, members-only community. This keeps your audience engaged and generates recurring revenue while ensuring they get real results from the solutions offered in your book.
- Host a workshop. Instead of a lecture-style master class, create a hands-on workshop where your readers can actually apply the solutions from your book.
- Publish an audiobook. With the rise of audiobook consumption, this is a must-have format to reach more readers and generate additional sales.
- Partner with book clubs. Get your book featured in existing book clubs to expand your reach and leverage their engaged audiences.
- Speak at live events. As both an author and a speaker, you'll be seen as a true thought leader. Use these stages to sell books and land new clients.
- Upsell in your existing funnels. Never forget how much value your book holds. Make sure it is strategically placed as an upsell or one-time offer in any sales funnels you already have running to add more value.
- Offer book signings. While these don't always translate to huge sales, they're great for building social proof and connecting with readers in person and who doesn't love a bit of audience building?
- Host a live event. This is THE BIGGEST money-maker and impact-generator. Hosting a live event covering the content of your book is quite simply the easiest way to spread your solution to a wide audience. I hosted a summit around my book and made $30,000 from it. You can see how I did that here. But the bottom line is... take your book's content & solution and put it on a stage that you build!
The key is to get creative and think beyond just selling your book on Amazon. Your book is so much more than just words on a page - it's a tool to grow your influence, generate leads, and scale your business. So let's put it to work for you!
What do you think? Which of these ideas are you most excited to implement? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
