Leadership Trust is Earned

Effective leadership is about positive influence-uniting people and bringing out the best in others. It's about service to others, and the relationship supersedes the reporting structure. So, it doesn't matter if you are a first line supervisor, Department Manager, CEO, Chairman of the Board, or President of the US. If your consistent pattern of behavior includes actions like the above most people will distrust you. YOU become the obstacle to success. They will remember you for how poorly you treated them and others not any of your accomplishments. Your effectiveness suffers, and so do those you negatively influence.

We need more leaders at all levels with character: ethics, integrity, humility, empathy and honesty. As Nelson Mandela said, in contrast to so many so called leaders today, “As I have said, the first thing is to be honest with yourself. You can never have an impact on society if you have not changed yourself... Great peacemakers are all people of integrity, of honesty, but humility.” Globally, leaders aren't trusted in so many situations. Stay awake, a revolution in leadership thought and practice is needed and underway.

Leaders that manipulate. They generally feel they have out-smarted everyone only to find that eventually, they get caught up in their own lies. This ruins their credibility within their organization and leads to their departure.
