12th May 2020

Today 12th May is the International Day of Nurses during the International Year of Nurses and Midwifes as decided by the WHO (World Health Organization). Is it by random that during this year the Covid-19 pandemic is putting these professions in the frontline as never before?

Since the beginning of this pandemic, nurses, midwifes but also all health care professionals have been deeply affected and we all since then recognize them has heroes. And that's more than awarded.

But let's take a minute to reflect on this.

What if this pandemic never touched us worldwide? How many people realize that every day nurses are the foundation of our healthcare systems because they are taking care of their patients 24/24, 365/365. Do our public authorities pay tribute to and value this profession? Everybody can find the answer to this question.

We all know that there is permanent shortage of nurses with increased workload and heavier tasks to be performed. This is a known fact but unfortunately not taken seriously enough. It is more than time to permanently acknowledge how much these health care professionals invested in the past and will continue to invest in the future as we all can potentially be in their caring hands during our life. Therefore, even when this pandemic will be over, we need to continue to consider, respect and support all of them as being a cornerstone of our societies.

Let's take care of them so they can take care of us and hats off!

Amen Philippe, I totally agree. Appreciation in the short term is one thing. Valuing them long term for answering the call to nursing is another. Let us hope our memory is not short lived.
