The 12.7 GHz Band – An Opportunity to Advance the Next Generation of Wireless Services?
J. David Grossman
Vice President, Regulatory Affairs at Consumer Technology Association
CES 2023? is right around the corner, and 5G will once again be a theme driving so many of the products on display – from smartphones to drones. CTA has long advocated for a balanced approach to spectrum policy, which recognizes the benefits of both licensed and unlicensed use. ?
It is an approach to spectrum policy that has consistently garnered support from both sides of the aisle, and it is why CTA was excited to see FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel circulate a Notice of Inquiry (NOI) among her fellow Commissioners that would examine repurposing up to 550 megahertz of spectrum in the 12.7 -13.25 GHz band for next generation wireless services, including 5G and beyond. ?
While an NOI is just the first step in the rulemaking process, it is critical for the U.S. to maintain its global leadership in technology that policymakers engage in these conversations, and ensure we’re leaving no spectrum band unturned when it comes to supporting the next generation of wireless services. Unlike lower frequencies that are increasingly crowded, mid-band spectrum, such as the 12.7-13.25 GHz band, offers significant capacity and speed to enable more 5G services. Similarly, when compared to higher frequencies, mid-band 5G can travel greater distances and more easily penetrate through indoor locations. Bandwidth-intensive applications, including augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), telesurgery, and robotics, are among a growing set of technologies that could benefit greatly from having a large block of contiguous spectrum.?
On October 27, the Federal Communications Commission will vote on whether to approve this 12.7 GHz NOI and begin the public comment process. CTA looks forward to participating in the proceeding, and others after it, that encourage more efficient licensed and unlicensed spectrum use to facilitate the next generation of wireless applications and services.
