1.21 Gigawatts... GREAT SCOTT

Back to the Future....one of the greatest film trilogies ever. I love Back To The Future for its blend of sci-fi madness, feelgood all american charm and great mix of characters.

You don't have to look too hard to find a lot of messages that are useful in business. The trilogy possesses lessons for businesses at every stage in their development. Apart from just being a fun set of movies, the Back to the Future series is, in many ways, infused with the spirit of innovation, overcoming hurdles and trailblazing.

The below lessons are taken from the story and happenings within the film and also the backstory and production challenges.

  • Keep going if you believe in what you are doing. 1. The script was rejected 44 times before getting a production green light. Once Steven Spielberg joined the project as a producer, the final draft was set up at Universal Pictures. Doc Brown had 100's of failed ideas, projects and inventions before creating something brilliant! DON'T LISTEN TO THE NEGATIVE NAYSAYERS , THEY WILL ONLY BRING YOU DOWN
  • Just because its not worked for others it doesn't mean it won't work for you. Sid Sheinberg was the studio exec responsible for getting Back to the Future into cinemas, He was nervous and disheartened by dismal box-office performances of time-travel movies Somewhere in Time, Time Bandits and The Final Countdown. Initially he wanted to play it safe and make Marty a friendly alien character. Robert Zemeckis and Steven Speilberg thought he was joking at first. They were not deterred by others failures and made sure they kept going!
  • If something isn't working then change it.  Filming began with Eric Stoltz cast as Marty. The director quickly realised he was woefully miscast. Eric wanted to do the serious and fashionable DeNiro take on the role. This involved staying in character on set and forcing a real life fallout with Thomas Wilson, who played Biff Tannen to the extent he bruised his collarbone after refusing to calm their fight scenes. EVERYONE GETS THINGS WRONG. MAKE CHANGES AS QUICKLY AS NEEDED. GATHER INFORMATION AND BE DECISIVE.
  • Have a mix of style, values, mission and purpose. There's a good reason Doc Brown's DeLorean needed to reach 88 mph. The internet is full of attempts to explain the speed the car had to hit in order to time travel (sample: "If the wormhole stability was measured as lasting only .10717 seconds then to move a car 4.216 meters long [A DeLorean] through the wormhole before it closes you would need to be moving at 39.3395 meters per second or 88 MPH"). But the truth is much simpler: the production designers thought it looked cool on the digital speedometer and would be easy for the public to remember. SOMETIMES A MIX OF DATA, SPIN AND GUT INSTINCT IS IDEAL
  • Things don't have to be perfect to be brilliant. In a film trilogy as complex as BTTF there are inevitable errors, goofs and plotholes galore. Why don't George and Lorraine recognise their own son as the guy that turned up at school and had such an impact on their lives? Why such pressure to steal the Almanac back in 1955 when you can go back and try again and again? This list could be endless. There is often room for improvement and we often chase perfection. Sometimes we don't need to.

George and Lorraine didn't recognise their own son as the guy that turned up at school because they'd never seen him before?! He wouldn't be born till 20 years later...

All great points - even if you are already aware of them as concepts, they make you think and re-evaluate what you are doing.
